I had a bit about this in the smut chapter from that longfic I wrote last year. But rereading it now that I've got a firmer idea of my HC, I think the bit in Ch 1 where Shulk worries he's lacking something compared to Rex's Alrest spouses makes sense as him having a rare moment of dysphoria.

Random XB headcanon time: I like to think that Shulk got all the gender in the split when he and Alvis separated at the end of 1. Exorcizing Zanza also freed him from the mental constraints trapping him into a narrow box and he later realized he's bigender - a simultaneous mix of male AND female.
