#OTD in 1945, the Japanese Instrument of Surrender, the agreement that formalized the surrender of Japan, was signed by Allied powers and Japan on the deck of USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay. It marked the end of hostilities in World War II. This photo depicts one of the more controversial signings.

#OTD in 1944, the Regiment could hardly field a complete squadron, let alone the three (plus RHQ) it was supposed to be fielding, mostly due to equipment losses from being constantly called forward for offensives to help close the Falaise Pocket.

#OTD in 1940, the RCAC was formed through the efforts of Frank Worthington, who claimed he fought alongside Pancho Villa and had many adventures across Central America. Maybe it's true, maybe not, but one thing's for sure: he had a major impact on Canada and he used a certain synonym for mistake.

Historians of Bluesky, we're trying find more about this photo of German POWs being marched through a town by Canadians. According to the Archives of Ontario it's from the Somme sector in 1916, but the National Library of Scotland says its from an unknown location in 1918. #FirstWorldWar #Canada

#OTD in 1944, Padre Creelman held his first service for the Regiment in France. In his sermon, he told the Regiment that if the Germans had murdered Canadian prisoners, the Hussars must not imitate them, for he had no desire to be padre to soldiers who murdered prisoners.

#OTD in 1944, Sgt. Athelestan Owen Dodds and Tpr. Richard Henry Jeffreys, returned to the Regiment after going missing during the Battle of Le Mesnil-Patry on 11 June 1944. Sgt. Dodds survived the war, Tpr. Jeffreys was killed at Keppeln, Germany on 26 February 1945.

With the passing of Harry Favell, 102 year old Tpr. Charles Allison Reid of New Brunswick is now the last living Hussar who fought in the Second World War. He was taken on strength on 10 June 1944, survived Le Mesnil-Patry, and was discharged for medical reasons on 15 April 1945.

#OTD in 1944, the Battle of Le Mesnil-Patry was fought in Normandy. The Queen's Own Rifles of Canada and the 1st Hussars, @1hmuseum.bsky.social, attacked toward the 12th SS held village. The advance was a disaster for the Canadians, who took heavy casualties from the SS guns and tanks. #history

Toronto Star articles on Tpr. Perry and Capt. Smuck, and a Montreal Star article on Tpr. LeClaire. All three were murdered by the 12th SS on this day in 1944.

Tomorrow will be the 81st anniversary of the Battle of Le Mesnil-Patry, in which Tpr. Bowes, Tpr. Charron, Tpr. Dumont, Tpr. Hancock, Tpr. Leclaire, Tpr. Loucks, Tpr. Perry, Tpr. Preston, Tpr. Scriven, Tpr. Silverberg, L/Sgt. Simmons, Capt. Smuck, and Tpr. Sutton of the 1st Hussars were murdered.

We would like to extend our condolences to the family of Sgt. Harry Favell, a crew commander in 'C' Squadron during the Second World War who passed away on June 4th. This photo was taken just 3 weeks ago when members of the Museum Committee visited him on his 104th birthday.
