WordCamp US 2025Â Recap
This year, I was fortunate enough to attend WordCamp US in Portland, Oregon. It was both my first time at a US WordCamp and a US flagship event. Monday: Arrival I arrived in Portland after approximately 23 hours of travel at around 10:30 in the morning and was met by a fellow Automattician, Ojoma Emina, at baggage claim (the power of the WordPress-branded laptop bag!).

How I use Perplexity to create technical written content
In case you missed it, AI search company Perplexity was recently called out by Cloudflare. This post isn't going to go into the details of that conversation, but you can read about it on Techcrunch, read Cloudflare's post and read Perplexity's reply. I've openly admitted in my live streams that I prefer to use Perplexity over ChatGPT for research and to assist my writing, so the conversation around it's methods is interesting to me.

Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?
In Terry Pratchett's Discworld novel Thud, one of the characters asks the protagonist, Commander of the City Watch, Sir Samuel Vimes, "Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?" This roughly translates as "Who watches the watchmen?" Sir Samuel's answer is simple yet profound: "We all keep an eye on each other." In this age of AI assisted software development, the most important elements — proper planning, testing, and security — are even more critical to success.

You don’t need paid tools to create high-quality video tutorials
As an employee at Automattic, I have access to paid tools like Camtasia and Descript to create and edit video content. While these tools are great, I am regularly reminded that not everyone has this privilege. At the same time, I am also reminded that when I completed my Automattic trial project, I used 100% free and open-source software (FOSS) to record and edit my video content, and these tools work just as well as their paid counterparts.

Personal opinion, but people who want to video record themselves at the gym need to place the camera in a position that focuses primarily on them, and not on other gym-goers around them. Placing the camera in a spot that people are going to walk across is just shitty.

OK, so bear with me on this, one, but this idea came from a recent gym workout. For the past 3 years or so, I've been finishing every gym workout with the same ab exercise, a Captain's Chair hanging leg raise. I started with 3 sets of 10 reps, and I've slowly increased that to 3 sets of 20. I've maintained that for about a year now.

Thoughts on perfect practice, and how it applies to AI technologies.

The power of practising perfectly
Many years ago, while attending a jiu-jitsu seminar as a white belt, the seminar instructor said something that's resonated with me ever since. Contrary to the popular phrase, practice alone does not make perfect. If you practice incorrectly, all you will do is make an incorrect practice perfect. Rather, perfect practice makes perfect. Whenever you drill something, drill it as methodically and as perfectly as you can.

Last week, I tried to use AI to complete what I assumed would be its greatest triumph: fixing a bunch of specific errors in a plugin. I thought this would be the perfect application for an AI coding agent. The results were less than spectacular.

Some of the best ideas come from random conversations. 💡 That’s how we ended up building a GitHub Issues content calendar using AI—because, well, GitHub doesn’t offer that natively. 🧵
