Photo from another post. We have numerous statues in Cardiff and quite a few around the docks. This one is of a Coal Miner and symbolises the exportation of coal from the valleys to the world. Wouldn’t it have been good to have had a statue of a Coal Trimmer at the docks. #coaltrimmers

ln 1911 the Coal Trimmers came out on strike in sympathy of the Seaman’s strike which had spread from Liverpool to Cardiff. It was the only strike that the Coal Trimmers came out for as they managed to negotiate agreeable outcomes through their Union. #coaltrimmers #coaltrimmersunion

Kids today….. In 1889 it was reported that an accident had occurred at Penarth Docks. Arthur Davies aged 14 was employed as a Waggon Coupler and was coupling coal waggons when it struck him in the face and head. He was taken to Cardiff Infirmary and he had a head fracture and disfigured face.

Happy St Patrick’s Day to all relatives of Irish Coal Trimmers. It was the Irish that were recruited by the Marquis of Bute to build Cardiff docks and once built many turned their hand to Coal Trimming whilst others became docks labourers.

The Pilot Pub in Penarth was a meeting place for the Penarth Coal Trimmers Union. Serves really good food and drink now. #penarthcoaltrimmers #penarthdocks

This involved using shovels and wheelbarrows to move coal within the ship’s hold.

Coal Trimmers worked at ports and docks, where they were responsible for loading and distributing coal into ships’ bunkers. Their main task was to ensure the coal was evenly distributed to maintain the ship’s stability during the voyage.

I was a student there in the 80s/90s The docks have changed massively since I left I was present at the event where the 'Cardiff Bay' name & logo was revealed for CBDC, 1987 I think, quite odd for the residents having their home renamed I love Cardiff & have a comprehensive store of old images

There be dolphins! Hunting for the old hospital ship HMS Hamadryad on the 6-inch OS map of Cardiff I was delighted to see dolphins marked amidst the jetties and buoys. I had to look up what these features were - they're mooring structures, for anyone else who didn't know. #Cardiff #Wales #Hospitals
