Today's session at Minsmere kicked off CES (Constant Effort Site) season with quality over quantity: Nightingale, Lesser Whitethroat and a surprise Common Redstart - a species we rarely catch, especially in Spring. Thanks to Viking Optical for their support.

We had House Martin,Yellow Wag,Willow Warbler,Common Redstart,and Tree Pipit,plus more The 8 of us left visited Cavenham Heath,where we had Grasshopper Warbler,Wheatear, and Cuckoo, to name a few. The ringing group caught the first Minsmere Nightingale of the year yesterday - a bird that was ringed as a young male in April 2025, now back on his territory for the second year. Join us again next Thursday for our ringing demonstration in North Bushes. Thanks to Viking Optical for the support.

Today we ringed what is possibly the first Nightingale of the year to be ringed in the UK at a site near Ipswich. There has been an influx of males heard singing across Suffolk this week, the start of what will hopefully be a successful breeding season for the species. Supported by Viking Optical.

Last week at Minsmere we recorded an interesting Chiffchaff with a UK ring from outside our group. Recovery data shows it was ringed in Warwickshire on the 26th May 2018 as an adult- making it atleast 7 years and 10 months old! Thanks to Viking Optical for the continued support.

It was lovely to see so many visitors at our ringing demonstration at RSPB Minsmere today. Highlights were two Willow Warblers, and the first Reed Warbler of the year that was already wearing a French ring! Thank you to Viking Optical for their support.

Our first ringing demo of 2026 at RSPB Minsmere yesterday was very successful, inspiring young visitors over half-term. There was a noticeable increase in Blackcap and Chiffchaff as they return to breed. Join us every Thursday from 9am. Thanks to Viking Optical for their support.

Revisiting the Raveningham farmland site on Wednesday, the ringing team recorded around 169 birds. Highlights included a Meadow Pipit, 94 Linnet, 15 Reed Bunting, and 24 Yellowhammer. Many thanks to Viking Optical for their continued support.

We had great weather for yesterday’s @waveneybird Brecks trip. Good views of Goshawk, Crossbill, Hawfinch, Brambling and Mandarin. Plenty of Buzzard and Siskin about in the Forest. Join us on April 26th for part2.

A great example of an adult male Starling processed by one of our ringers. The blue bill base and dark eye identify him as a male during the breeding season, while the sharply pointed tail feathers with defined buff edges and dark tips confirm he’s an adult. 🐦
