People who care about journalism should read "60 Minutes" correspondent Sharyn Alfonso's full email about CBS News boss Bari Weiss spiking her report. Alfonso makes key points about not letting the government veto your story and not betraying sources. Weiss could use ethics lessons from Alfonso.

People must grasp the idea of “media capture.” It’s when authoritarian regimes and/or their powerful allies take control of media to stifle independent voices holding the government to account. It’s one way Hungary’s Viktor Orbán keeps power. In the U.S., it’s what the Ellisons have done with CBS.

If you're a staffer at 60 Minutes who worked on that CECOT segment that got yanked by Bari Weiss at the last minute, figure out a way to leak it. Not saying it's an easy decision or there won't be consequences, but ask yourself why you got into journalism in the first place.
