Today is NEC Awareness Day. At VON, we track rates of NEC every year and while rates of these outcomes have been steady, there is variation in outcomes when sorted by race. We encourage centers to use this data for quality improvement to improve the care and outcomes of infants and families. #neosky

Looking at data from the VLBW database, we see human milk rates at discharge remain low and there are disparities across race and ethnicity. There is work to be done to help improve human milk use as it is essential in the NICU and is a preventative measure for NEC. #neosky

May is NEC Awareness Month. In review of NEC specific VON data, we see a decline in rates from 2010-12, but see steady rates over the last few years. Research on NEC reduction is ongoing and needed. We must monitor: antenatal steroids, admission temperature, and breast milk use. #neosky
