I think the significance system we used in Perfect Draw solves a lot of problems with narrative battle styles, but I'm not sure if I'm just taking the easy route by using it again. For now it's just a starting point to test from so its probably fine. I'll find out if i need something new.

Fundamentally, Powered by the Apocalypse is a system ABOUT failure. It's why it works in Monster Hearts & Apocalypse World. Why we chose it for Perfect Draw! was to let players PUSH THROUGH those failures like a shonen hero. You'll "fail" and then get all the tools you need to succeed anyway.

People have this strange idea that you can just throw money at a video game being bad and it'll become good. That's not how it works; you can't just pay people and spin up a AAA studio from nowhere. Amazon tried. Google tried. This shit is actually complicated.

Pokemon doesn't need voice acting. But lord does it need to stop making cutscenes that feel like you turned voice volume to 0 percent.

I think a lot of people miss that having ideas is like 10 percent of good game design. And the rest is being good at understanding playtest feedback and responding to it effectively.

As someone with adhd that is often caught in the "power washing" video spiral - I think the reason power washing simulator never grabbed me is litterally just cause, it doesn't actually simulate the dirt. And that's the funnest part imo.

I think a lot of experienced GMs will see guidance designed for inexperienced GMs and think the designer is setting weird boundaries for no reason. If you're willing to be a bit of a game designer, you can do anything. But you have to remember that some players need that handhold.
