More than half of Rhode Island voters polled last month support parking reform to unlock land for building more homes, while 88% agree that the General Assembly should take action to address the costs and availability of homes.

Earlier this week we revealed the latest survey results (conducted by @today.yougov.com) of the state of housing in Rhode Island. From East Providence, we reported out the findings that assessed residents’ priorities, views toward the local housing market, and support for our policies.

Parking mandates might sound harmless, but they quietly shape our neighborhoods and Main Streets. Requiring more parking than a building calls for drives up costs and takes up space that could be homes, daycares, parks, or the small businesses that make our communities thrive.

Faith-based affordable housing is gaining momentum nationwide. 7states (and counting) have passed laws that make it easier for churches, synagogues, and other faith institutions to build on their land. Now, Rhode Island has the chance to bring new homes for people who need them.

It's working! Policies making it easier to build new homes in Rhode Island are starting to get results. After the state expanded residents’ right to build an accessory dwelling unit (ADU), the number of permits issued statewide jumped from 11 in 2021 to 163 in 2024.
