Using Google's Notebook LM, I explored the intersection of the BC Ministry of Education's "Considerations for Using AI Tools in K-12 Schools," the OECD's AI Literacy Framework, and UNESCO's "AI Competency Framework for Students" to create this list of ten essential AI competencies for our students.

Students can generate the product, but they can't generate the process. That's my teaching motto next year.

I don't tell my students how to feel about AI technology. But I certainly tell them about it. We chat about the ethics of it. How it could help society. How it could harm society. The whole spectrum. I'm not sure what the answer is. But not talking about AI is not a viable option. Not to me.

Can AI replace teachers? Of course not. However, with that question comes the responsibility to create a learning experience and environment that can not be replicated by machine.

I wonder to what extent generative AI is being leveraged by early career teachers? How should I phrase this email to that parent? How should I navigate that difficult conversation with this colleague? How could I approach this behavior management problem more productively?

This week, my Philosophy 12 students will apply their growing understanding of ethics to AI. They get to choose an AI concern they feel passionate about and then construct an ethical framework that'll limit the potential harm associated with unregulated AI. #bced

Just because AI can do something isn't necessarily a good argument for not having students learn to do it, too. The gulf between what AI can and can not do will narrow with time.

"You could totally sell this!" I’ve heard that more than once about the teaching and assessment resources I’ve created. But maybe I’m just not wired that way. I once had a sales job—I quit after a week. I don’t want dollars from teachers. I want change from the system.

My Philosophy 12 students are analyzing and then assessing the significance of the Simulation Hypothesis. Today, we had a rich discussion on what is the end goal of technology innovation. Students are rather pessimistic and cynical toward technology these days, especially tech companies.

Tip: When customizing an AI chatbot for your class, use ChatGPT to help you write its prompt. My prompts are often paragraphs long to ensure the bot doesn't stray from its learning intention and doesn't engage with inappropriate topics. I also specify its tone and the complexity of its language.

When faced with a constant montage of AI-generated images, many of which are trained (or will be) on other AI-generated images, I finally understand what Baudrillard was writing about in Simulacra and Simulation. Reality isn’t what it used to be.

I'm conflicted: I want to stay informed by watching the news, but I also want to avoid the distress it brings.

Deciding whether to allow AI use in your classroom is one thing. Creating space for open discussions about AI use with your students is another entirely. I believe every teacher can make the latter happen.

Today, I attended a GenAI & Education session with reps from other school districts. It was an awesome opportunity to see the work other school districts are doing in the area. It also provided much needed time to work on our own plans. Thank you, @shareski.ca, for running such a great session.

Something I'm teaching students: When presented with overwhelming evidence that you can't reasonably dispute.... You change your mind. And that's okay.

There needs to be more professional development books written for teachers by active classroom teachers. My goal for the next 5 years is to be involved in such a project.

At my school, we've launched an AI-themed book club, and AI discussions, along with tech spotlights, will be a regular feature on staff meeting agendas. No matter your stance on AI in education, it’s crucial to foster staff discussions on the topic.
