Took the afternoon off for a wetlands fix at @wwtworldwide.bsky.social Martin Mere. No sun, no cold weather; it's hard to find joy in the landscape under such endless drear. A couple of marsh harriers and a flock of egrets were welcome sights that helped to lift my spirits though.

In the lab today - three boxes of water samples (two from UK lowland peat ditches, one from South African lakes) to run for UV-vis today, to give data on dissolved organic matter.

New ditch methane paper out, via my ongoing collaboration with Zhifeng Yan's group at Tianjin University. We show agricultural ditches can affect regional CH4 budgets. agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/...

And today our MSc students took their bog samples into the lab - measuring N, P and DOM composition in water, and pH and EC in soil extracts.

Peatland and wetland folk - what loggers are you all using for water table these days? In the past I've used TruTracks (cheap but frequently break) and Troll 500s (great, but pricey). Any suggestions?
