🍄‍🟫 #DidYouKnow that from 1983-84, a partially built tunnel for the Second Avenue Subway was briefly used to farm edible mushrooms?

This 1903 photograph shows Brooklyn Borough Hall before it was dwarfed by the larger buildings we know today. On the far right of the image, a street car is visible. This was most likely the Brooklyn Heights Railroad’s cable car line that connected Montague Street with the ferry to Wall Street.

The RTO (Rapid Transit Operations) Rodeo is a skills-based competition for transit employees where contestants must troubleshoot problems to get subways ready for service. Knowledge tested includes train operation, safety regulations, equipment maintenance, and right-of-way rules and procedures.

#WomensHistoryMonth: In 1917, when US entered WWI, most men of working age left their jobs to join the war effort. This included transit workers in #NYC. But, the city still needed to keep moving, so, in response to the sudden labor shortage, the Brooklyn Rapid Transit hired its first women workers.

🎭 Happy #WorldTheatreDay! This 1977 #NYCsubway poster from the #NYTMCollection shows a dozen actors from concurrent Broadway shows posing together in costume. The group is photographed on an R44 subway car for the "MTA gets you there" campaign. It's a star-studded line up. Can you name the actors?

#TodayinHistory: It’s Tunnel Day! #OnThisDay in 1900, Mayor Robert Van Wyck, silver spade in hand, broke ground on the #NYCsubway system at an excavation site in front of City Hall. This #NYTMCollection photograph captured the historic moment for #NYC.

#TodayInHistory: #OnThisDay in 1968, the R40 Slant made its debut in the #NYCsubway system, beginning on the F line. This 1966 artist's rendering from the #NYTMCollection was issued by industrial designers Raymond Loewy and Associates, and William Snaith, Inc to showcase the "new look" of the R40.

#ThenAndNow: Pictured here in this 1915 image from the #NYTMCollection, is the corner of Ditmas Avenue and Gravesend Avenue in #Brooklyn. Gravesend Avenue is now known as McDonald Avenue. It was renamed in 1933 for John R. McDonald (1871-1932), chief clerk at the Brooklyn Surrogate’s Court.

From the #NYTMCollection, this spring-loaded token case dates to circa 1960 and has three slots to hold #NYCsubway tokens. By 2003, when tokens were phased out, cases such as this one would no longer be an essential for commuters. Did you ever own a token holder?

#EidMubarak and #HappyEid to all who celebrate from the #NYTransitMuseum! #DidYouKnow that the first mosque in #NYC and one of the oldest mosques in the United States is in Williamsburg, Brooklyn? The building is located at 104 Powers Street between Manhattan Avenue and Leonard Street.

🌱 Happy first day of #spring! Here in New York City, we have two springs. They're not seasons; they're stations! A station called Spring St appears on both the IRT Lexington Avenue Line and the IND Eighth Avenue Line.

When it first left Grand Central, the 20th Century Limited was heralded as the pride of the New York Central Railroad. Providing express service to Chicago’s LaSalle Street Station, “The Century” quickly became the preferred mode of travel for America’s tycoons, moguls, and show business luminaries.

What did Inwood, Manhattan look like before the #NYCsubway opened? Taken in 1906, this #NYTMCollection photo shows the Dyckman Street station on the IRT Broadway–Seventh Avenue Line (today’s 1 train) three days prior to its opening.

#WomensHistoryMonth: These #NYTMCollection photographs from 1943-44 show women who worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad. Photo 1: A “switch tender” aligning routes for car movements at Sunnyside Yard. The physical nature and tools of her work have changed little from the railroad's early days.

🧠 Happy #PiDay and Happy Birthday, #AlbertEinstein! #DidYouKnow that the @MTA released an Einstein #MetroCard in 2009? It was created as part of the “Train of Thought” series, which showcased insightful quotations from famous artists, writers, scientists, and philosophers.

Throwing it back to when the 9 train still existed, the Q train was orange, and MetroCards were blue!

#TodayInHistory: #OnThisDay in 1950, the last trolley crossed the Brooklyn Bridge. A major transit artery for much of its history, the Brooklyn Bridge had also carried cable cars and an elevated railway. Trolleys were the last to go. #TransitTrivia: This clip from the final scene of the 1986 film "Crocodile Dundee" shows a game of "telephone" taking place between actors Linda Kozlowski and Paul Hogan in what is supposed to be the 59th Street–Columbus Circle station in #Manhattan. Do you know where it was actually filmed?

⛏️ 🔧 These are just some of the many tools that belonged to a sandhog named Antonio who worked on the tunnels of the IND subway system in the late 1920s.

#DidYouKnow City Island in the #Bronx once had its own #monorail? When the monorail opened in 1910, it was the only monorail in the United States. It ran from Bartow Station (a now long-forgotten ruin inside Pelham Bay Park) to Marshall's Corner, and over a bridge to the tip of City Island.

👀 What a view! These #NYTMCollection photographs show R33WF subway cars being delivered via barge to #NYC in anticipation of the 1964-65 World’s Fair. Behind the barges, the Manhattan skyline and Williamsburg Bridge can be seen.

The Beach Pneumatic Transit opened #OnThisDay 156 years ago in 1870. Thirty-four years before the first subway line in #NYC, Alfred Ely Beach dreamed of using pneumatic tubes to power an underground transit system. When he couldn’t get the permits he needed, he went ahead and built it anyway!

#TransitTrivia: 🎬 The opening credits of the 1977 film "Saturday Night Fever" begin with a shot of a #NYCsubway train on elevated tracks in #Brooklyn. Can you name the car model or the station the train pulls into? Hint: Though the train is labeled "B," this station is now served by the D train.

🎡 Missing summer? Here are some photos from our archives showing the former Sea Gate trolley line traveling down Surf Avenue in Coney Island in 1912, 1940 and 1944. In all three #NYTMCollection photos, the entrance to historic Luna Park is visible just behind the trolley.

#MysteryMonday: Have you ever noticed this unusual wallpaper when riding the subway? #DidYouKnow that it features a repeated pattern of the official seals of both New York City and New York State? The wallpaper is standard on R46 cars, which have been running in the subway system for over 50 years.
