#TodayinHistory: #OnThisDay in 2002, R143 cars entered revenue service in the #NYCsubway system. The R143 began its tenure on the L line and was the first NTT "New Technology Train" series order by the "B" Division.

This 1972 #NYTMCollection photograph shows an aerial view of Roosevelt Island (known then as Welfare Island) looking south with #Manhattan at right and Queens at left. No Roosevelt Island Tramway is visible as it did not open until 1976.

#TokenTuesday: This 1933 #NYTMCollection token was used to transfer between buses within the service area of the East Side Omnibus Corporation. The token is punched out with the initials “E” and “S,” indicating “East Side.”

🎨 #DidYouKnow the #MetroCard is beloved by a generation of artists and designers? Opening March 16 at our Grand Central Gallery, the Transit Museum's new exhibit, “Inspired by MetroCard,” explores how an everyday transit object evolved into an artistic medium.

#BlackHistoryMonth: 🥇 #DidYouKnow that one of the first Black bus operators in #NYC was also an Olympic gold medalist? Edward “Ed” Lansing Gordon began working for the New York City Omnibus Corporation in 1942, driving routes along Eighth Avenue and Lexington Avenue.

#ObjectSpotlight on this circa 1915 cast-iron lamp and its contract drawing with installation instructions. Lamps like these were placed at the entrance to stations on the New York Municipal Railway, a subsidiary of the BRT. This one was used either on the Broadway Line or the Fourth Avenue Line.

Metro-North has had several public safety initiatives over the years, including the friendly robot “Metro Man.” Metro Man joined the team in 1983, and was originally sent into communities to teach children about the difference between diesel service and third rail power.

#BlackHistoryMonth: In 1971, a group of Black women employees at the MTA broke two glass ceilings when they were promoted the Assistant Train Dispatcher. Retha Cholson, Eleanor McBean, Clovis D. Washington, and Velma Newton were the first-ever women and the first Black women to have this role.

#MetroCardMonday: 🎉 Happy 113th Birthday, @grandcentralnyc! #OnThisDay in 1913, the majestic Grand Central Terminal opened to the public after a decade under construction. Released by the @MTA.info in 1994, this Grand Central #MetroCard contains an image of the Terminal’s iconic main concourse.

🚌 #SurfaceSunday: This 1997 @MTA.info #NYTMCollection training video was used to teach bus operators about #MetroCard transfers. MetroCard eliminated the need for paper transfers between buses and added the capability of free transfers between buses and subways. Do you remember paper transfers?

In honor of #BlackHistoryMonth, throughout February we’ll be highlighting inspiring African Americans in transit history. We begin with Granville T. Woods, a brilliant inventor whose legacy is still felt every day on the #NYCsubway. This 2004 #MetroCard celebrates Woods' achievements.

#DidYouKnow that Montague Street in #BrooklynHeights once extended all the way to the river? This #NYTMCollection photo shows the street in 1914 just, before the Montague Street Tunnel carrying the Broadway Line opened under the East River, and long before the BQE was constructed.

#DidYouKnow the Third Ave El had a Canal Street station right near the base of the Manhattan Bridge? This #NYTMCollection photograph shows the station in 1955, just days before the Manhattan section of the Third Avenue El was closed completely.

🎬 This clip comes from "Careers with a Future," a 1988 @MTA.info New York City Transit promotional video from the #NYTMCollection. The full VHS video highlights several employees, each talking about their jobs and the reasons they joined New York City Transit.

These #NYTMCollection photos from our Yard Collection show the Coney Island Yard in 1969. They were taken by the NYCTA Construction Division and include rolling stock, as well as views of the then-brand-new Coney Island Yard Tower, which still stands today. Have you visited the Coney Island Complex?

🎲 #ObjectSpotlight on this 1983 transit-themed board game called "Straphanger" from the #NYTMCollection. Straphanger includes illustrated game pieces, drawn to resemble a variety of #NYCsubway riders, and a game board depicting #NYC with simplified subway routes.

This 1985 #NYTMCollection "Tunnel Trooper" button was issued to employees of @MTA.info Metro-North's Training and Safety departments after completion of a three-hour Park Avenue Tunnel tour. The tour allowed staff to see the tunnel up close and learn how to evacuate safely in case of an emergency.

#TodayinHistory: #OnThisDay in 2023, Grand Central Madison officially opened, and today it turns 3! From the #NYTMCollection comes this 1968 artist’s rendering by John Gould, which shows the vision for a future 63rd Street Tunnel.

🎬 Produced in 1989 for the @MTA.info, “Progress in Motion” describes the improvements made in the transit system since the Capital Program began. This clip covers the TBTA (Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority), which has been known as MTA Bridges and Tunnels since 1994.

#TodayinHistory: #OnThisDay in 1928, the Flushing-Main St station opened on the IRT Flushing Line in #Queens (today's 7 train). These images show Main Street in 1923, prior to the construction of the IRT Flushing Line, and in present day.

#TransitTrivia: In this clip from the 1974 comedy “For Pete's Sake,” Henrietta (Barbra Streisand) dips into the #NYCsubway on the run from the police and finds herself being pursued by a dog. Do you know the name of the station where this scene was filmed? Hint: it's not actually Clark Street.

#DidYouKnow the entrance to the East 180 Street station on 2 and 5 trains was originally part of the New York, Westchester, and Boston Railway (NYW&B)? The NYW&B opened in 1912. Then, in 1917, the IRT (Interborough Rapid Transit) built its East 180 Street station right next door.

#DidYouKnow that many routes of the #NYCsubway system used two letters in their service designation before 1985? This 1979 #NYTMCollection photo shows the IRT platform at Atlantic Avenue/Pacific Street station (now Atlantic Avenue-Barclays Center). Signage points to the RR and the QB.

💾 What did computers look like in 1964? This #NYTMCollection photo shows a NY Central Railroad technician using an IBM 7010 mainframe computer at Grand Central Terminal. The computer includes everything pictured: console, disc drives, processing modules, and tape storage.

This #NYTMCollection footage of the construction of the Archer Avenue Lines comes from the @MTA.info's “Transit Construction Progress Report,” a 1973 short film detailing several local transit improvement projects that were underway at the time.

#TodayinHistory: #OnThisDay in 1911, the 191 Street subway station opened on the IRT Broadway–Seventh Avenue Line in Washington Heights. Served today by the 1 train, the 191 Street station is the deepest station in the #NYCsubway system at approximately 180 feet (55 meters) below street level!

#TokenTuesday: This #NYTMCollection token, from the mid-late 1920s, was used to pay the fare for trolley shuttle service over the Williamsburg Bridge. This short route travelled between the trolley terminal at Delancey Street in Manhattan to Bridge Plaza in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

Old City Hall Station was closed to the public in 1945. These #NYTMCollection photos were taken during the station's final year in service. 80 years later, the elegant station is only accessible to members of the #NYTransitMuseum on a guided tour.

#StationSpotlight: Served by today MTA Metro-North, Irvington, NY has been accessible by rail since 1849, when the Hudson River Railroad began service from Peekskill to #NYC. At that time, the area was known as “Dearman.” (It was later changed to “Irvington” in honor of author Washington Irving.)

🎬 Released in 1989 and narrated by actor Avery Brooks (Spenser: For Hire, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine), “Progress in Motion” highlights the strides made by the @MTA.info during the early years of its Capital Program. What transit infrastructure or bus and train car models do you notice?

This #NYTMCollection Long Island Rail Road annual pass was valid in the year 1964. It features “Dashing Dan,” or the “Dashing Commuter,” who served as the Long Island Rail Road's official logo starting in 1959.

#TodayinHistory: #OnThisDay in 2022, the last of the R32s made a ceremonial final ride in the #NYCsubway. This #NYTMCollection subway car model was provided to the Transit Authority to demonstrate the look of the R32 cars when they were ordered.

This #NYTMCollection photo shows an R40 train on the IND Rockaway Line sometime in the late 1970s or early 1980s. The front car is slanted, as it is one of the original R40 cars which came to be known as “slants.” Slants had a sleek and futuristic look created by designer Raymond Loewy.

When this 1975 souvenir brochure from the Electric Railroaders Association fan trip on the South Brooklyn Railway arrived in our archive, we had a feeling Jeff might know something about it. For this #WhatsNewInTheArchive, Elise is joined by Jeff Erlitz who remembers that trip like it was yesterday!

#MetroCardMonday: As New York as a bagel, a cup of coffee, or the @nytimes—that's what photographers Michael Coughlan and Felix Candelaria were predicting for MetroCard when they staged this 1994 photoshoot to promote its launch... It looks like they were right.

🚌 #SurfaceSunday: The first General Motors RTS (Rapid Transit Series) Advanced Design buses went into service in 1981. Their signature curved windshields are a familiar sight to generations of riders. They were retired in 2019.

Today is #WorldBrailleDay! The Tactile Guide at the #NYTransitMuseum is a resource for visitors who are blind or have low vision to enhance a self-guided visit. It features a tactile map of the Museum as well as tactile drawings of objects, including our vintage #NYCSubway cars.
