#TodayinHistory: #OnThisDay in 1962, the first set of R33ML cars were placed in revenue service on the 1 line. Built by the St. Louis Car Company, with an order placed for 540 cars, the R33s were the second-largest number of cars of this era, just behind the Brightliner order of 600 cars.

#TodayInHistory: #OnThisDay in 1970, The Velvet Underground released “Loaded.” The album featured psychedelic art of the #NYCsubway by Stanislaw Zagorski. The classic 1960s “TA" (short for Transit Authority) logo is visible on the entrance globe.

This #NYTMCollection photo shows the BMT 4 Ave—Garfield Place Substation in 1968 versus today. It is one of 218 substations in our system. Located on the border of #Gowanus and #ParkSlope in Brooklyn, the Garfield Place Substation is still in use and looks nearly identical today as it did in 1968.

#TokenTuesday: The Five Boroughs Token debuted in 1995 and was the last token to be used in the #NYCsubway. A fare increase to $1.50 ushered in the new token which featured a pentagonal hole at the center to symbolize the five boroughs of #NYC.

Today is #VeteransDay! To all those who have bravely served our country – thank you. Featured in the #NYTransitMuseum’s Photo Essay Collection, this photograph shows soldiers taking a well-deserved nap in a #NYCsubway car in 1943.

#MysteryMonday: Have you ever wondered why the 1 train stops at 18 Street, but there is no corresponding station for the 6 train on the East Side? Well, there was! These #NYTMCollection photographs show the 18 Street station under construction and in its early days.

What would you order off this 1939 railroad dining service menu? The menu, from the #NYTMCollection, was given to riders on the 20th Century Limited, an express overnight passenger train that was part of the New York Central Railroad System.

These #NYTMCollection photographs from 1948-49 show 6000 series trolley cars running on the Putnam, Flatbush, and Flushing Avenue lines in #Brooklyn. Once a common site all over the borough, trolleys began to disappear from Brooklyn streets in the mid-1940s until all were gone by 1956.

🐎 In 1965, photographer Phillip Leonian artfully captured the excitement of horse racing in several images which appeared on advertisements for the Aqueduct Racetrack. The colorful ads are new to the #NYTMCollection and were donated by the Phillip Leonian Archives.

Do you remember the #MetroCard Bus? It debuted in 1996 and traveled around the five boroughs making regularly scheduled stops at senior citizen centers, shopping and community centers, and along major bus routes.

#TodayinHistory: #OnThisDay in 2003, the last Redbird #NYCsubway cars were retired from revenue service. Hundreds of people rode a final 11-car train of Redbird R36 cars on the IRT Flushing Line (7 train) from Grand Central to Flushing Meadows-Corona Park in a bittersweet celebration.

#SurfaceSunday: Taken in the 1980s, this #NYTMCollection photograph shows Bus #5127 on 42nd St in #Manhattan. Modeled TDH-5303, it was one of 350 General Motors “New Look” buses from the New York City Transit fleet that were sent for complete overhaul and rebuilding in the 1980s.

#TodayinHistory: #OnThisDay in 1918, the worst subway accident in #NYC history occurred. A train of wooden cars derailed in a tunnel below Brooklyn’s Malbone Street (now known as Empire Boulevard), resulting in the death of nearly one hundred riders.

🌀 #OnThisDay in 2012, Superstorm Sandy struck the Northeast, devastating much of the New York metropolitan region and testing riders, transit workers, and infrastructure in unprecedented ways. These #NYTMCollection photos show some of the devastation right after Sandy and the MTA's response.

Before smart phones and WiFi, how did travelers stay informed? From 1937 to the early 1970s, the Grand Central Theatre drew crowds for newsreels such as “Up to the Minute World News.” This sign, originally on the Lexington Avenue façade of Grand Central directed people to the theatre.

🎂 Happy birthday, #NYCSubway! 121 years ago #OnThisDay in 1904, the IRT (Interborough Rapid Transit) subway opened with 28 stations along a 9.1-mile line extending from City Hall to 145th Street. This #NYTMCollection silent film, shot just months after the subway opened, shows its early days.

#TransitTrivia: In the film "Gloria” (1980), Gloria Swenson (Gena Rowlands) is on the run from mobsters and successfully evades them, saying “You let a woman beat ya, huh?!” The film includes this classic #NYCsubway scene. What car model appears in the scene and what station does Gloria escape to?

🗺️ This circa 1925 #NYTMCollection map was the first to show #NYC's full rapid transit network after the system’s expansion in the 1920s.

Today is #InternationalDayofClimateAction. 🌳 These 1990 #NYTMCollection car cards from an @MTA.info ad campaign tout the environmental benefits of public transportation. The ads point to the problem of cars creating pollution and congestion. As an alternative, using buses and subways is promoted.

#StationSpotlight on 215 Street station in #Manhattan. The station, opened in 1906, is served today by the 1 train. Perhaps the most noticeable element of the 215 Street station is its beautiful, restored IRT signage, shown here in these present-day photographs.

👋 Goodbye #MetroCard! This 1996 #NYTMCollection instructional video gave riders detailed directions on how to use MetroCard, including the correct way to swipe and to check the card’s balance. The video played continuously on @MTA.info MetroCard buses.

🍫 #DidYouKnow that #NYCsubway stations used to have thousands of vending machines? In fact, New York's transit system is the first place in the US where vending machines were introduced! Vending machines first appeared on elevated train platforms in the 1880s.

This #NYTMCollection diagram shows a flying junction at 53 Street in Manhattan, where the IND’s Sixth Avenue Line crosses the Queens and Washington Heights routes. A flying junction is an elevated crossover that allows trains to pass each other without stopping, similar to a highway overpass.

#TodayInHistory: #OnThisDay in 1964, Simon & Garfunkel released their debut album “Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M.” For the album cover, Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel were photographed inside the #NYCsubway's Fifth Avenue/53rd Street station. The musicians met at the age of 11 in Forest Hills, Queens.

This #NYTMCollection photograph from the 1910s shows trolley workers posing in front of a Ralph-Rockaway Avenue trolley. Trolleys were an important part of #NYC’s transportation network in the first half of the 20th century, but were phased out completely by 1957, in favor of buses.

This 1969 front route replacement roll sign from #NYTMCollection appeared on BMT and IND R16 cars. It shows various designations that existed at the time and could be cued up for a trip. Two of these letters, K and H, are no longer in use. Do you remember riding the R16s on any of these routes?

#TokenTuesday: Do you ride the PATH train? Until 1962, its routes were operated by H&M Hudson Tubes. The system was renamed the PATH when it was taken over by the Port Authority of NY and NJ. This 1946 #NYTMCollection token was part of the H&M era. It features a cut out H with the words “one fare.”

#DidYouKnow that Brooklyn's 5th Avenue once had an elevated rail line running over it? The Fifth Avenue Elevated Line ran through Downtown Brooklyn, then along 5th Avenue through Park Slope and Sunset Park. At 36th Street, the line curved west and ran along 3rd Avenue to a terminus at 65th Street.

100 years ago #OnThisDay, an extension of the IRT Flushing line opened with a new 111 Street station at Roosevelt Avenue in Corona, Queens. The debut of the IRT in Corona opened the area to vast commercial and residential development. This image shows Redbirds in service at the 111 Street station.

This 1930 #NYTMCollection photo shows eight men standing in front of one of the first R1 #NYCsubway cars (car #107) at the 207th Street Yard. The R1s, nicknamed “City Cars,” were manufactured by the American Car and Foundry Company. R1s were all arranged as single units and numbered 100 through 399.

These mosaics are part of "Westside Views," a collection of 37 artworks at the 86th Street #NYCSubway station. Celebrated Nuyorican artist Nitza Tufiño directed the 1989 project, and it was one of the earliest site-specific art installations commissioned by MTA Arts & Design.

#TodayinHistory: #OnThisDay in 1955, R17 cars entered service in the #NYCsubway system. Nearly identical to the R16 models placed in service on the BMT division the year before, the R17 was an economical purchase – interchangeability of parts between models saved greatly on repair and maintenance.

This 1974 @MTA.info Commuter Rail System Map takes a broad look at the transit systems of the tri-state area, including MTA Long Island Rail Road, PATH, and other lines serving upstate New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut that today are operated by NJ Transit and MTA Metro-North.

“Working the A Train” (1981) took a behind-the-scenes look at the #NYCsubway system and showcased the work involved in running the city’s longest train line. At one time, the film played in the gallery of the New York State Museum, accompanying the exhibit of its R9 subway car #1801.

#OnThisDay last year, #StatenIsland's rapid transit got a major upgrade when the R211S entered service. The state-of-the-art cars now run on the SIR (Staten Island Railway). These photos, from the inaugural ride, show the first R211S train to depart from St. George Terminal. 📷: @MTA.info

#OnThisDay in 1933, seven new stations opened on the IND Culver Line in Brooklyn (the F and G trains): Carroll Street, Smith-Ninth Street, Fourth Avenue, Seventh Avenue, 15th Street–Prospect Park, Fort Hamilton, and Church Avenue. These images show the line before, during, and after construction.

Today, Saul Zabar passed away. For more than 70 years, he was the principal owner of the legendary Zabar’s market in #NYC. This #NYTMCollection image captures the Zabar’s storefront in 1957, twenty-three years into its time in business and seven years into Saul Zabar’s tenure.

#MysteryMonday: What do diamonds mean in the #NYCsubway? In use since the 1980s, the diamond route indicator is generally used to show that a train route’s service has been modified; regular service is marked with a circle.
