#MysteryMonday: Have you ever noticed these colorful strips of flooring at the Jay Street—MetroTech station in Downtown Brooklyn? They are called "Tactile Guideways" and are one of a host of strategies that the @MTA.info is testing  to broaden #accessibility in the #NYC transit system.

#TransitTrivia: Much of the 1995 film “Die Hard with a Vengeance" was filmed in #NYC, although this scene was not. However, the subway cars shown are real #NYCsubway cars purchased from the New York City Transit Authority. Do you know their model? How accurate do you think the set is?

🍔 We usually think of the #NYCsubway as a means to travel from place to place, but stations themselves can be destinations when a favorite eatery or bar is tucked inside. In the history of #NYC, many food and drink establishments with this distinction have come and gone.

💡 Color-coding of station entrance globes began in the 1980s to help #NYCsubway riders determine if entrances were open or closed, and if a token booth was available. Green globes indicated a 24-hour token booth, yellow meant part-time, and red meant the entrance was blocked or was exit only.

#TodayInHistory: #OnThisDay in 2012, arguably the biggest quirk of the #NYCsubway system was resolved when an uptown transfer finally opened between the 6 train at Bleecker Street station and the B/D/F/M trains at Broadway–Lafayette Street station. The uptown transfer was completed in 2012.

Thanks to a team of volunteers from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, our vintage fleet is looking spotless! 🧽 The generous volunteers gave their time via the Remembrance Through Renewal (RTR) program — a community service initiative that honors the lives lost on September 11, 2001.

This #NYTMCollection photograph shows Columbus Circle in Manhattan in 1901. To build the 59th Street–Columbus Circle station, the monument was shored up and the column and streetcar tracks had to be put on temporary wooden stilts. Today, the station complex is served by the A/C, B/D, and 1 trains.

#TodayInHistory: #OnThisDay in 1978, the JFK Express, known to many locally at its time as “The Train to The Plane,” began operation.

#OnThisDay in 1915, during tunnel construction of the IRT West Side-Seventh Avenue Line, an explosion underground caused the street above to collapse. New York Railways Company trolley car #1527, with 78 people aboard, fell 30 feet into the area below. In total, seven people lost their lives.

#DidYouKnow that double-lettered nomenclature was used in the #NYC subway system until 1985? The purpose of repeated letters was to denote that the train was running via the local line of its express counterpart, marked by the same single letter. The AA, CC, and EE were among these local lines.

The @nytransitmuseum.bsky.social #BusFestival is such a nice little event. I like that they also brought in other non-bus heavy equipment this year, like the tunnel scrubber.

#DidYouKnow there was once a 91 Street Station on the IRT Broadway–Seventh Avenue Line (today's 1 line)? Taken just two years before the station was closed, this #NYTMCollection image from 1957 shows the 91 Street Station’s southbound entrance at the northwest corner of 91st Street and Broadway.

🎬 The 1981 short promotional film “Working the A Train" once played in the gallery of the New York State Museum next to a #NYCsubway car. 44 years later, that car, R9 #1801, is still on exhibit at the Museum in Albany. Have you seen it?

🦜 Happy #NationalPetBirdDay! Back in 1910, #Brooklyn bird lovers wanting to bring home a new pet could look no further than the “Long Island Bird Store,” pictured here in this #NYTMCollection cyanotype image. Located at 107 Flatbush Avenue, the store sold a variety of bird species.

#FashionWeek: Howdy! In #NYC, anything goes, including this stylish cowboy get up, as seen by photographer Ralph Curcio at the 59th Street—Columbus Circle station in the 1970s. Perhaps the cowboy got lost on his way out west and end up on #Manhattan’s West Side instead? 🤠

🚐 #MeetTheBuses at #BusFestival! We are delighted to welcome Paratransit buses 6237 and 6298 to Bus Festival 2025 on Sunday, September 21.

Happy #HispanicHeritageMonth! Today we are sharing some our favorite Spanish language car cards from the #NYTMCollection. These appeared on our city's buses and trains over the last five decades.

#FashionWeek: 👮 We recently received a donation of three uniform coats that belonged to Transit Police officer Anthony "Tony" J. Sarich, whose 20 year career with the Transit Authority began in 1955. The coats join other uniforms, hats, and transit fashion in the #NYTMCollection.

👗 #FashionWeek: Why decorate with sequins when you can use tokens! This dazzling line-up of #NYC "Y" cut token-covered garb from the #NYTMCollection — including leotard, jacket, hat, and shoes — was purportedly worn in the “Miss New York” pageant in the 1970s. Would you wear them?

🎉 The 34 Street–Hudson Yards station turns 10 today! Located at 34th Street and 11th Avenue, the station opened #OnThisDay in 2015. It extends service on the IRT Flushing Line (7 train) to Times Square and connects to train storage tracks that run south to 25th Street.

#TransitTrivia: This clip, from the iconic 1992 #Seinfeld episode “The Subway,” shows the perennial struggle to find a seat on rapid transit. Like most television shows, Seinfeld was filmed in Los Angeles, and, as you may be able to tell, this is not a real #NYCsubway car.

The weeks and months following September 11, 2001 saw a long process of recovery as @MTA crews began rebuilding crushed tunnels and repairing systems to restore full service in Lower Manhattan. Beneath Ground Zero, rubble filled the subway and PATH train tunnels.

When news came of planes striking the Twin Towers, nobody was certain what was happening. Like all New Yorkers, @MTA.info workers were shocked and confused. But they did know one thing: they would be needed. Many who were at home rushed to work, or went to Ground Zero, ready to help.

During the September 11th terrorist attacks, @MTA.info bus 2185 was badly damaged. It sat near Ground Zero covered in dust, ash and fallen debris. Though the bus could have been sent off to scrap, the MTA chose to rebuild it as a symbol of the city's resiliency.

Managers at the MTA's Subway Command Center shut down the subway at 10:20am on September 11, 2001. Halting subway service was first and foremost a safety decision. Almost immediately, crews began inspecting Lower Manhattan tunnels for bombs, and testing tracks with empty trains.

From 1973 to 2001, the Twin Towers stood at the base of Manhattan, a symbol of #NYC and America. With its iconic architecture, the World Trade Center was synonymous with the city. The Towers were so much a part of NYC that their presence was taken for granted. It seemed they would always be there.

#ThenAndNow: This 1980 #NYTMCollection photograph shows riders taking an escalator down to the platform level at Lexington Av/53 St station on the IND Queens Boulevard Line (currently E and M trains). These escalators have moved thousands of people each day for decades.

#TokenTuesday: #ObjectSpotlight on this Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority token from the #NYTMCollection. Minted in 1982, this copper-plated token cost 60 cents and covered the fare for the Marine Parkway, Henry Hudson, and Cross Bay bridges.

📺 This 1989 TV commercial from the #NYTMCollection was one of a series called “The Subway. We're Coming Back, So You Come Back!” The slate of @MTA.info ads touted the revitalization of the transit system and featured real New Yorkers talking about the improvements they had noticed so far.

#ObjectSpotlight on this 1964 advertisement from the #NYTMCollection that ran in advance of the introduction of the new fleet of R32 subway cars into the #NYCsubway system. In it, a woman rushes down the stairs to board a brand new R32.

#ParkSlope 115 years ago! Taken in 1910, this #NYTMCollection cyanotype photograph shows 4th Avenue between 13th and 14th Streets in Park Slope / #Gowanus, #Brooklyn during the construction of the BMT Fourth Avenue Line (today’s R train).

🪙 #TodayinHistory: #DidYouKnow that bus operators in #NYC used to make change for customers? That ended #OnThisDay in 1969, when city buses began requiring exact fare or tokens. This #NYTMCollection photograph shows signage on the B41 bus in #Brooklyn notifying customers of the new policy.

#DidYouKnow that the Staten Island Railway did not accept tokens until 1988? Instead, riders purchased paper tickets for the train line. This vintage Punch-Rite 403 hole puncher from the #NYTMCollection was used by conductors on the line during the 1950s/60s.

1982 was the last year Conrail ran service on the Harlem Line before Metro-North took over operations. This #NYTMCollection photo shows a Conrail train pulled by locomotive 5040 at the historic Chappaqua station during the final year of Conrail service. A new station was built in the late 1980s.

#DidYouKnow that the Q train was once designated with the color orange? From 1988 to 2001, the Q ran along the Sixth Avenue Line in Manhattan. This destination sign from #NYTMCollection would have been seen in R46 cars during that time.

Who doesn't love dessert? 🍰 At Horn & Hardart's Automat, diners could buy high quality fresh food, including pies, cookies, and cakes, from coin-operated windowed compartments. This 1930s #NYTMCollection "Subway Sun" concept drawing by Fred Cooper advertised the Automat's beloved chocolate cake.

#TransitTrivia: This scene from the 1990 film “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” takes place in a #NYCsubway station labeled “City Hall,” but this is not actually City Hall station. Do you know where it is? Can you also name the car model that passes through the station in the scene?

#DidYouKnow there was once a trolley that ran across #LongIsland from north to south?#TodayInHistory: #OnThisDay in 1909, the Cross-Island Trolley opened from Halesite to Amityville, creating a route across Suffolk County, and connecting the towns of Farmingdale, Melville, Huntington and Amityville.
