The U.S. housing market is frozen. Our new Redfin analysis finds just 28 out of 1,000 homes sold this year—a 30-year low. Why? A trifecta of affordability challenges, rate lock-in, and economic caution has both buyers and sellers staying put.

Being poor is not a crime. We can't just get rid of people who can't afford food and shelter. Once you accept that truth it's obvious the solution is food and housing assistance.

I like living in a free-market economy, but a free market economy often does not provide jobs that pay everyone enough to afford food and shelter. The fix is to redistribute the gains of a free market economy to those who earn the least. Eliminating that redistribution is cruel and self-defeating.

Dead Internet theory is so real. It's clear there are bots that exist to sow division. However, I'm also highly suspicious there are bots to boost morale. I keep getting comments on my tiktoks like "Great job Daryl" or "Well done Daryl" and it's from an account following 3000 with only 80 followers.

As China halts U.S. soybean imports for Argentinian ones, American farmers face frustration over a U.S. bailout for Argentina's economy. According to Redfin, this is impacting housing, with 2 in 5 homes in Des Moines & Omaha seeing price drops—double the national rate.

A U.S. deal to aid Argentina could make global investors nervous. This uncertainty often leads to higher government borrowing costs, which in turn means more expensive mortgage rates for you. At Redfin, we're watching how this could impact home affordability.

In the year 2025 is it legal to deny someone housing because they have autism, because they are Black, or because they are a member of a protected group? The answer should be no, but laws have to be enforced in order for them to be effectual. And new evidence suggests that HUD isn't doing its job.

Economic power in action 💵 💪🏽 Searches for "Cancel Disney plus" surged yesterday. "Cancel Netflix" shown for comparison.

Inflation & student loan payments are harming Gen-Z credit scores. At Redfin, we see this as a threat to housing security. Bad credit can make it harder to find an apartment and more expensive to get a mortgage to buy a home.

A negative review from a negative person, is actually a positive review. That's just math.

Just cancelled Disney Plus (Hulu and HBO Max were collateral damage because of the bundle) and Paramount Plus too. On the bright side this will give me more time to read books.

The Fed cut interest rates for the first time this year. Mortgage rates have already come down in anticipation of this news, and Redfin agents report this has led to more activity among homebuyers looking to take advantage of lower mortgage rates when it's still a buyers' market in most of the U.S.

Mortgage rates (30-yr fixed) now down to 6.15% according to mortgage news daily. I'm not sure if homebuyers will take notice before we get to 5.99%. But if you aren't susceptible to left digit-bias, you can take advantage of cheaper mortgages in this buyers' market.

As Redfin's chief economist I follow both home prices and household budgets, and inflation in groceries is looking more and more concerning.
