I can't reply to this thread, but this what AutoFS was created for. Using fstab will cause problems if the network is down. The sigh is well-earned though. AutoFS is complex and (argh!) there's no GUI. It's 2025 and Linux still can't easily map a remote drive permanently. It's really frustrating.
