Our first reaction was: When is American Ethnologist going to get one of those letters?! 😉 After all, anthropologists have been grappling with questions of bias and viewpoint diversity since… forever. We have a LOT to say about that. We haven’t gotten a letter (yet), but…

April 2025: NEJM, JAMA, Obstetrics & Gynecology, and Chest all got vaguely threatening letters from U.S. Attorney Edward R. Martin Jr., asking whether they “accept articles…from competing viewpoints” and hinting that editorial decisions may be scrutinised under “relevant fraud regulations.”
