On This Day: "The Worst Journey in the World" begins 1911. This photograph was taken in a hut on the coast of Ross Island. Edward Wilson, Henry Bowers and Apsley Cherry-Garrard, had travelled on foot for 35 days through the darkness of Antarctica to collect penguin eggs for scientific research.

On This Day: Midwinter Day is an celebration held across Antarctica on the winter solstice. The Midwinter Day celebration is credited to Robert Falcon Scott and the crew of the Discovery Expedition who, on June 23, 1902, observed "mid-winter festival" in a deliberate imitation of Christmas.

Family Ties: In 2018, Jade Hameister and her father, Paul, skied to the South Pole led by polar guide, Eric Philips. Jade became the youngest person in history and the first Australian woman to ski from the coast to the South Pole.
