I realized I should probably look for a new job this year. When I came into work the day after the ICE shooting, I heard my boss regurgitating word for word the Fox News spin of the story. That there was pre-text for killing this woman in front of her wife and child. That she bumped him with a car.

It’s painful to live in a world where cruelty is rewarded, defended and enshrined within practically all public institutions. Having empathy and caring for others is an act of defiance in a world desperately trying to beat the humanity out of all of us with force.

A problem that was unique to Virtual Boy that contributed to its downfall was that it was marketed and conceptualized as a futuristic platform but devs pretty much treated it like a more powerful Game Boy that could do stereoscopic 3D

The lack of interviews or even a very carefully managed Ask the Developer for Metroid Prime 4 speaks volumes. Nintendo does Not want to talk about this game’s development. I also wonder if they are worried about Tanabe saying something controversial like when he was asked about Paper Mario in 2020.

This is sad, Takahashi does great work. It’s just another grim reminder that creator names carry very little weight in games unless they are attached to a famous IP or are making a very similar game to what they became famous for.

I feel like if Prime 4 had just come out around when it was originally planned to, it may have faired a bit better critically. It seems to have a lot of hallmarks of 2010’s western AAA design that stick out like a sore thumb in 2025.

I wonder what’s going on with the Wario franchise right now within Nintendo. The Wario brand was once so successful they could support a consistent series of platformers then minigame collections with a bunch of strange off-shoots along the way. There’s potential there

I’m really happy every single time a Rare game makes it onto Nintendo Classics because it just feels right to see them acknowledged as part of the back catalogue. Battletoads in its all its infamy is still an important NES game that is worth having alongside your Mario’s and Zelda’s

Nintendo Switch 2 “Oh Banana!” Edition

Today is the 20th anniversary of the Xbox 360 launch and with it the release of Kameo: Elements of Power! This is one of the best single player games Rare put out in that era with a short but decently replayable campaign, 10 playable monsters and plenty of cheats/ extras/ cosmetic skins to enjoy.

Having a real angel and devil on my shoulder moment today, I saw a listing for the Virtual Boy that seemed extremely reasonable for the price. One on hand, I can probably get a lot more out of it than most folks because I like R&D1 games. On the other hand.. it’s pretty expensive for so few games.

I feel like people should become a bit more comfortable acknowledging that their favorite franchises/ IPs are Ships of Theseus with people coming and going constantly. That’s just inherent to these long running franchises and shouldn’t automatically invalidate new entries compared to old ones.

It’s a weird fandom behavior to hold up a piece of art as like this perfect thing that means everything to you yet you hold the creator(s) of that art in contempt and feel like you “get it” more than them. It’s like.. being parasocially possesive

The comparison between Dread and Prime 4 is inevitable but also unfair in a way. There was a concept for what to do with Metroid 5 back in 2005, Sakamoto and company had an idea for what to do next. The execution on Switch was different than it would’ve been on DS but the ideas were there

The new tougher difficulty mode in Pikmin 4 is pretty cool. It forces you to engage with some mechanics/ level design bits that are otherwise irrelevant given how busted Oatchi’s charge and Ice Pikmin are. Items also have a much greater utility, especially Ice Blasts. #Pikmin4

Kirby Air Riders is really fun. I appreciate that there’s basically no down time when racing and getting hit only slows you down a little bit. The character/ vehicle roster is also great even in this limited demo. I am so ready to play as Gooey riding a mech for 500 hours.

It feels like Sony and Microsoft are in a strange transitional stage where they are nominally still first party game devs but they act more like third party devs publishing multi platform. Structurally however, a lot of the barriers put up for exclusivity on games/ IP still exist in these companies

Sometimes, I wake up in the middle of the night horrified to remember that Sony owns Lemmings. That’s such an important historical game that it feels wrong that it’s stuck in a console maker’s Disney vault. Especially when Sony has given up on trying to push any smaller/ legacy IPs.

Luigi’s Mansion has arrived on the Switch 2! It’s fun to see it launching near the start of a console’s life again just like it did back in 2001. The last time Nintendo put it out, it was an end-of-life title for 3DS that felt like a moody farewell to that era of Nintendo.

I want to get the new Katamari but I have a sinking feeling they will reveal a Switch 2 version with no upgrade path or something after the fact and I’ll be stuck with the 30 FPS Switch 1 version. That aspect of the Switch 1 to 2 transition has been very messy

Something I find interesting about the Rare buyout is how just a couple years before Microsoft bought them, Rare moved into an enormously expensive custom facility in Manor Park that Nintendo helped fund.

It’s very fun to see Sakurai come back to the Kirby series and do Smash Bros. style fan service for it. All the playable characters in Riders are excellent choices, even beyond ones that were playable in Star Allies. Lololo and Lalala are a great deep cut to Hal’s pre-Kirby history
