Let it be known: the N64 is a great console for shooting games. Goldeneye 007, the Turok trilogy, Perfect Dark, and two classics by Treasure: Bangai-O and Sin and Punishment.

The Nintendo 64 is 30 years old! When it launched with Mario 64 in Japan 30 years ago, it’s hard to imagine the impact. Full 3D gaming was here, just 3 years after the primitive polygons of Star Fox for SNES.

2D Metroid abilities are like: “Here is the Schmovement Ball: it enables Samus to dribble herself like a Basketball and bounce off flat surfaces. You can also dunk on Ridley.” Metroid Prime abilities are like: “Here is the Gauntlet of Opening, you can use it to open magenta colored doors.”

Perfect Dark is fucking awesome when you find a way to play it that improves the framerate. Control-wise I think it still plays really well and shooting/ strafing and using the gadgets is super satisfying. It was a game about the future that felt ahead of its time!

I think I appreciate DK64 a lot more now after playing Bananza which in a lot of ways is a modern refined take on the Rareware collectathon style of platformer. A lot of weird stuff introduced in DK64 like the shooting mechanics were recontextualized in a smart way in Bananza

It’s interesting to consider that even during the generations in which Nintendo underperformed like the N64, the GameCube and the Wii U, they were never in any real financial danger. They have an enormous war chest of funds that could keep them solvent on its own for a long time
