Masripithecus: A new Miocene ape from Egypt sheds light on the origins of modern apes
In a study published in Science, an international research team from the Mansoura University Vertebrate Paleontology Center (Egypt) and the University of Southern California (U.S.) describe Masripithecus moghraensis, a newly identified fossil ape that lived about 17–18 million years ago, during the Early Miocene.

Named after the cat-headed goddess Bastet, Bastetodon is symbolically linked to Sekhmetops, inspired by the lion-headed goddess Sekhmet. Mythology meets science in this incredible find!

This discovery reshapes our understanding of hyaenodont evolution! Bastetodon and its relative Sekhmetops reveal that these ancient carnivores originated in Africa before spreading across the globe.

It all began when team member Belal Salem

spotted large teeth sticking out of the ground. This led to the discovery of a nearly complete skull of Bastetodon, a fearsome leopard-sized carnivore that once roamed ancient lush Fayum forests.

Cretaceous fossil skull from earliest known modern bird
The nearly complete fossilised skull of an ancient extinct bird might lay to rest controversial debate amongst palaeontologists about the first avians.

Evaluation of the endocranial anatomy of the early Paleogene north African gavialoid crocodylian Argochampsa krebsi and evolutionary implications for adaptation to salinity tolerance in marine crocodyliforms
We reconstructed the endocranial anatomy of Argochampsa krebsi, a fossil gavialoid crocodylian from the early Paleogene of North Africa, identifying potential osteological correlates for salt glands....
