We did a short but steep hike down ~2000 ft of the canyon today. It. Ruled. Seeing the faulted Supergroup in contact with the inner gorge basement and then the overlying Tapeats is just too incredible. ⚒️🏜️

Here’s the yield of our five hour fossil hunting trip on Morris Island SC. A dozen shark teeth, lots of shark vertebrae, some phosphatic bones and gastropods, and some fossils we’re calling cat b-holes, for lack of identification (second image). ⚒️

Several falls ago, we field-tripped out to Kentucky with students to see these beautiful outcrops of Carboniferous Fort Payne. Here are two perspectives taken with a drone. Too bad these are ~ 6 hr drive from campus... ⚒️

Wandering the woods in Manchester VT, and pondering these well-rounded clasts. I’m way above the modern floodplain, and these clasts must be fluvial gravels, not glacial till(?). I wonder how the pre-glacial landscape would have looked? Fun times in fall foliage. ⚒️
