Anyway, believe it or not, this is a much less grim topic than most of my papers and I loved working with Lana and Kate on it. Bonus: the primer includes illustrations of both Elon Musk and Anna Delvey! Hope you all find it useful.

ANYONE can be a victim of a scam and scams are underreported. We need better anti-scam strategies that don't blame the victim or responsibilize individuals, given the scope and scale of this problem.

At the same time, the scam industry is huge and corporatized, and many scammers are human trafficked into call center compounds where they're forced to work long hours and beaten if they don't comply. They are perhaps the most victimized people in the entire ecosystem of scams

LLMs enable vernacular translation and persuasion that can greatly improve pig butchering & romance scams, allows scammers to emulate corporate branding and messaging, and adds deepfakes and voice emulation to the scammers bag of tricks

The question I keep coming back to is how should we think about consumer protection and financial literacy in this context?

I love how many undergrad papers I'm getting this semester that are like, this writing is kinda not good but there is no way an AI wrote these weird sentences.
