Wednesday Wonderings: How is Tom McClintock able to represent our needs when he won't even sit down with folks to have a simple conversation?

Recently, I had the privilege of speaking to government students at Amador High School. These bright, ambitious young people are the future of our community.

If you make $30,000 per year or less, the Big Beautiful Bill has a surprise for you: A tax increase that starts in 2029. Folks are struggling to get by, and this is how Tom McClintock's solution to the problem is to make it much worse.

Today, we honor the brave service members who have sacrificed for and served our country, including my mom and dad who are both Air Force vets. The enormity of their contributions cannot be matched, but from the bottom of my heart, thank you.

Remember that one time Tom McClintock said “I put the Epstein matter in my don’t know, don’t care file.”? Yeah. We all do.

My grandparents were forcibly removed from their home during WW2. Their crime? Being Japanese Americans. The fear and division that drove our country to put citizens into internment camps is not that far off from what is happening in our streets today. Period.

Last year, Tenet (which owns hospitals throughout this district) made $4.1 billion in profits. Its CEO is the highest-paid healthcare CEO in the country, making $24 million in 2024. Our nurses are demanding patients over profits, and it was an honor to stand with them in solidarity.

My parents are both Air Force veterans. The ongoing government shutdown means the men and women who serve our country are not guaranteed their next paycheck. It is a slap in the face to their dedication and service.

Dia de los Muertos in Riverbank was an amazing mix of remembrance and celebration. There was food, music, family, and community. One woman designed 7 ofrendas to honor her family, and she was more than happy to let me share their stories. There is truly more that unites us than divides us.

Sometimes running for Congress makes every day feel like Halloween. Our current representative hands out tricks, but talking to voters is always a treat. Have a safe evening, and never trade a Snickers for anything less than three bags of Skittles.

One day left until Halloween! I was going to go as Tom McClintock, but sitting around and doing nothing isn't very fun.

What unites us is far greater than what divides us, but the career politicians in D.C. seem to have forgotten that. Even before the shutdown, the government wasn't working for the people, and the suits on Capitol Hill are more focused on party platforms than doing their job.

As an engineer, my job is to solve problems. The government has gotten really good at making more problems than it solves. It's time to change that.

Trump's demolition of the entire East Wing feels like an appropriate metaphor for the state of our nation, but we can't let that stop the fight to restore common sense in these uncommon times.
