I notice that I often need spend quite some time with my personal work for it to develop into something I'm happy with. Often well into rendering. Which is not an ideal time to make adjustments. Maybe I should try working on multiple illustrations at once so I can sit with the sketches longer.

Occasionally I pick a painting that speaks to me and I study it to find out why. This time I wrote down what I found:

DEAN CORNWELL – "IT’S HARD TO EXPLAIN" MURDER COMPOSITION ANALYSIS
Dean Cornwell was an American artist from the early 20th century, also called the Dean of illustration. He painted this canvas for the 1921 book “Find the Woman” by Arthur Somer Roche.

ARTISTS! I'm sharing my contract template with simplified language and easy to fill in sections This will be most helpful for smaller clients bc corps have their own contracts But providing the contract will help protect you from giving away rights to your art!

Man, it only took 20 minutes looking through portfolio websites with the eye of someone hiring, rather than just appreciating, to have it hit home how important clarity and ease of use are.

Time for another reference dump! This zip file contains 2,566 photos (6.58 GB) from the Metropolitan Museum of Art arms and armor collection. I tried to focus on the types of details you don't see in most available reference, like hinges and fasteners. Enjoy!

Ahoy! The scammers are here! I woke up to this old chestnut, and since Bluesky is pretty new, I thought it might be helpful to show y'all how this one works. A scammer will reach out for work, and it'll be really vague - a piece of his kid, or suddenly four, it doesn't matter, he doesn't care.

Hey all! As part of my ongoing education I occasionally do analyses of paintings that speak to me in some way. Here I’ve looked at a painting of Dean Cornwell in order to understand what compositional principles he applied. I’m curious to hear your thoughts!

Glaze and Nightshade

By now, I'm guessing most have already seen the news on our new project, Nightshade. Lots of artists sharing it, but here's the article from MIT Technology Review (tyvm to the wonderful Melissa Heikkila). This is a thread explaining Nightshade & its goals

This new data poisoning tool lets artists fight back against generative AI
The tool, called Nightshade, messes up training data in ways that could cause serious damage to image-generating AI models.
