This is not an exaggeration: There is not a single weather forecaster, TV meteorologist, airline pilot, computer scientist, or climate scientist in the WORLD whose work or life wasn't directly or indirectly improved or influenced by the science done at NCAR.

NCAR provides the facilities, tools, & data critical for atmospheric sci education & research. Leading computer models of the Earth System are developed here. The training, continuing education, & sci exchanges NCAR makes possible are irreplaceable. Its dismantling would be chaotic & devastating.

Just a friendly reminder that the Polar Vortex is not an Arctic storm, polar hurricane, blizzard or things that comes to visit us. Lobes of its wave system can dip south into the U.S. bringing colder air. I have already seen a car commercial improperly refer to it and a major newspaper headline.

Just threw up my hands in disbelief that the dataset I’m using has latitude North to South instead of South to North like the rest of my data. It’s comforting how, even as the world falls apart, some things stay the same.

Due to the current gap in funding from the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), the NSF Unidata Program is pausing most operations effective 12 May 2025. Nearly all staff will be furloughed until funds from our existing NSF grant become available. For more information, see

The details in the article are even worse than the headline. This would be DEVASTATING for so many reasons.

Yesterday I spoke at the Stand Up For Science rally in Buffalo, NY about the impacts of the cuts to NOAA and the NWS on all of us. I was loud. Let’s all be loud.

Trump's budget plan may cut NASA science funding by up to 50%, alarming scientists who call it an "extinction-level event" for space science. This threatens ongoing missions and would cede future space exploration to China. Also, about 30% of NASA's science budget is for Earth and climate science.

The NWS mission: “Provide weather, water and climate data, forecasts, warnings, and impact-based decision support services for the protection of life and property and enhancement of the national economy.” Again: “…for the protection of life and property and enhancement of the national economy.”

My favorite part of prepping for a new semester is dream big phase: group project with rubrics! Short videos to supplement lectures! I spend the day learning and exploring how to implement these ideas. How long can I stay in this place?? (classes start 1/22)

So excited to share that I received my first-ever grant as a PI and it’s from NASA! I’m going to be looking at forecasts of heat flux entering the stratosphere and supporting 5 undergrads to work on the project!
