like we need like a term for this, like... fandom astrology, where instead of intuiting any of the MANY VALID REASONS someone could be doing something (disliking a character, shipping them, etc) you come up with some completely wild different reason. they must hate gay people, or something.

i know op is talking about ffxiv but every time this comes up i think about someone who swore up and down a particular homestuck troll was a lesbian even though 1. bisexuality was the norm per word of god and 2. she had established attraction to multiple men. and got angry at people for disagreeing

this was like a decently known person with a lot of followers who would vague people and get them attacked for disagreeing so like, it wasnt harmless or anything, lol at the heart of the thing i realized is that op was projecting WAY too fucking much on that character, which, we've all done, but--

problem is when people project on a character and get attached to seeing them in a specific non-canonical way and then someone interprets them in a way that does not align with their view of them... they frequently receive it in the same way as an attack on themselves or invalidating their identity

Darigan Citadel does their first Pride parade immediately after finding out those exist in other lands... Skarl finds out about it, didn't even know gay people existed but the moment he finds out he starts a Straight Pride parade
