Entomologist, infrequent artist, WoW fanatic. GenerativeAI-free zone.
The fact that I can point out a significant number of insect species at the porch light and say, with confidence, "ugh, those ones taste terrible", has got to be the definition of Cursed Knowledge. The joys of collecting bugs with an aspirator!

Maybe after the fiscal year starts, some Departments will have new supervisor positions to fill. I don't really WANT to go elsewhere, but when my 20+ years of work are rewarded by being ghosted after not passing screening or being passed up for promotions by people with 20% of my experience...

Well, I didn't even make it past the screening process for that last promotion application. Whatever it is that this Department wants, I don't seem to have it.

Long work day, but I completed a fairly important cornerstone task a day ahead of my self-imposed deadline so tomorrow I can do other stuff at my own pace. Yay?

Well, I'm very blah today but I did manage to reorganize/restock my insect collecting field backpack and clean up the car a bit, so I guess that's a win?

Oh well, at least I collected 2 or 3 new insect species in the backyard today/tonight; that makes 460 so far. Wonder if I'll hit 500 at some point.

I don't like it when I'm in a good mood for no reason for more than a few hours. I suspect my brain is so fatigued by the horrors and such that it just gives up and decides to take a mood vacation that has me questioning my perception of reality.

Much of the huge diversity of arthropods looks just like this, tons of little stinkers that are nearly identical at passing glance. All are unique species with their own natural history and irreplaceable ecology, it just takes a very observant mind to appreciate it.

Here's that funky little fly: Asteia multipunctata (I think). It looks like it has a cartoonishly-white mouth, but it's really just a white stripe on its face.

Another day, another handful of new insect species from my backyard (today it's a tiny parasitoid wasp, some sort of fruit or frit fly, and a neat little microlepidoptera).

For a site where people submit blurry photos of insects taken through a screen door with a dirty iPhone lens, folks on iNaturalist sure can get uppity if a specimen photographed though a microscope is a tiny bit imperfect.

I just added the 450th species to my backyard insects book/catalogue, just in time for International Day of Biological Diversity! Here are a couple of interesting ones I added today: a shore bug (Saldula sp.) and a tiny water scavenger beetle (Cryptopleurum sp.)!

"What if I don't believe in Ghosts?" We thought of that! In fact, many Ghost Hunter shows often feature Skeptics. When you start a game of GHS, you get to decide what YOU believe (for this save at least) - Are Ghosts Real? Or are they Nonsense? Present your evidence and reap the rewards!

"Oh, I am not really a horror game kind of person." YO, ME EITHER. That's why we had to make it ourselves, LOL. No one was going to make a non-combat ghost hunting game without gore. XD GHS leans towards "Haunted Mansion" vibes. (Not Haunting of Hill House vibes.)

A very small parasitoid wasp from the backyard. I believe it's Tetracnemoidea sydneyensis, introduced to southern California from Australia in 1933 to combat the long-tailed mealybug.

I'm always amused when the door-to-door ISP pushers try to convince me to switch with "we provide the modem/router, no need to use your own"... Fool, I WANT to use my own so I can tinker with it or replace it in a pinch instead of waiting for your corporate office to send a replacement in 4 weeks.
