One of the great things about JB Priestley’s English Journey is that while he enjoys and extolls the country's timeless virtues when appropriate, he remains anti-nostalgic and fascinated by youth and newness. It's a brilliant book - I only read it last year and it was a bit of a revelation to me.

This building in Driffield holds a secret - it was the location of Slaughterhouse Studios from 1985 to 1992, where a lot of classic early Earache Records death and grindcore records (inc Napalm Death, Bolt Thrower) were recorded, plus Happy Mondays Bummed, Loop, Sisters of Mercy etc 👌

My Son is a Splendid Driver (1971) by William Inge, only so I can read it! Been after a copy for years but never turns up in the UK - so much so that it’s taken on a near mythical totemic quality, so I probably shouldn’t ever actually read it and inevitably be let down…🤷‍♂️

Repeatedly watching local BBC coverage - Look North specifically, but I assume it’s being played out across the country - where presenters simply repeatedly ask “what’s wrong with flying the flag?” and refer to it as a cosy “movement” with absolutely no reference to who’s behind it We’re cooked etc

Since I now have copies, I guess I’ll start this little “reading project” of JB Priestley’s English Journey and Beryl Bainbridge’s follow up from 50 years later. Will update as I go. I’ve got less a decade to plan writing the 100 years follow up… 🙃 #booksky 📚💙
