Just witnessed a model shift ride in front of my eyes this morning. Friend texted the gc that he took transit to work for the first time now that Line 5 opened. Previously he would've had to take a bus-bus-subway trip or a bus-subway-bus trip. Now he can get to work faster than driving.

took a trip on line 5 again.. feels weird to actually use this to go somewhere. 17 mins from Dufferin to Yonge. Lots of excess dwelling so the schedule could probably be cut back a little.

Line 4 works this weekend means the rare Line 4 Shuttle is running. A relatively calm operation vs the usual Line 1/2 shuttles.

It's really crazy travelling Europe and realising how much more advanced the signal and track infra is on their streetcars vs ours. No, Boston and SF are not good examples of streetcar infra. I'm glad someone is finally able to delegate to our officials what Europe has had for decades.

My Streetcar Stop Consolidation Concept: - Remove stops without an opposing stop and/or closer than 300m - Maintain a general maximum spacing of 500m on streets and 600m along ROWs - Move stops where turns occur to farside for TSP effectiveness - Consolidate stops for services in the same direction

Guelph Transit has a nice fare setup even though they not a part of the PRESTO network. For GO transfers, you pay your regular local fare on board the bus and tap at a transfer validator at the station where you get refunded the local fare. Their fares are also capped at 34 rides per month.

Hot take: The transit in Vancouver has lower frequency, shorter span of service, and frequent trip cancellations. The bike share system has paltry coverage, dated technology, and absurd pricing Toronto's sheer frequency, availability, and coverage of its transport systems makes it far superior.

The TTC website is now reporting daily OTP stats on the front page. This was previously available on the daily customer service report but is now placed front and centre for all to see. I'm liking the new CEOs transparency initiative.

Rode Line 6 again off-peak as an experiment to see how much faster service could be with optimisation. Trip time: 41 min Dwell from lights: 11 min Dwell from schedule padding: 4 min Actual run time: 26 min Increase the speed limit, and I'd say we could safely do 25 min off-peak/30 min peak.

Something few people discuss when it comes to unreliable TTC headways is operator behaviour. I just witnessed my 504 operator leave Dundas West 5 mins early, creating a 15 min gap in service on the A branch and artificially inducing bunching down the line. Needs to be cracked down on.

Line 6 late evening maintenance replacement bus is scheduled for a 34 min runtime, about 26% faster than the train (46 mins). Kinda bad. In reality, the replacement bus can make the trip in ~24 mins, about 54% faster than the on-street runtime I experienced on the train (~53 mins). Really bad.

Just stepping past the discussion over the speed and ops for a moment, it was clear from my two round-trips today that the line was rushed into opening with countless unfinished elements.
