Hot take: The transit in Vancouver has lower frequency, shorter span of service, and frequent trip cancellations. The bike share system has paltry coverage, dated technology, and absurd pricing Toronto's sheer frequency, availability, and coverage of its transport systems makes it far superior.

Rode Line 6 again off-peak as an experiment to see how much faster service could be with optimisation. Trip time: 41 min Dwell from lights: 11 min Dwell from schedule padding: 4 min Actual run time: 26 min Increase the speed limit, and I'd say we could safely do 25 min off-peak/30 min peak.

Something few people discuss when it comes to unreliable TTC headways is operator behaviour. I just witnessed my 504 operator leave Dundas West 5 mins early, creating a 15 min gap in service on the A branch and artificially inducing bunching down the line. Needs to be cracked down on.

Line 6 late evening maintenance replacement bus is scheduled for a 34 min runtime, about 26% faster than the train (46 mins). Kinda bad. In reality, the replacement bus can make the trip in ~24 mins, about 54% faster than the on-street runtime I experienced on the train (~53 mins). Really bad.

Just stepping past the discussion over the speed and ops for a moment, it was clear from my two round-trips today that the line was rushed into opening with countless unfinished elements.

Investing in your network by make it modern, attractive, and accessible means patronage will flock to your network. GO has done a great job of making its stations, trains, and services look like the 21st century despite no electrification. The same could not be said for many American agencies.

Food for thought: the 13.5 km/h average trip speed for Line 6 Finch West is slower than the PM peak average trip speed of 13.9 km/h for the 507 Long Branch streetcar, which has no private right of way for most of the route. In comparison, Lines 1 and 2 average 30 km/h and Line 4 averages 37 km/h.

Happy Thanksgiving, Toronto. I'm grateful for the TTC and all its hard-working staff delivering transit service which I rarely have to wait more than 5-10 mins for at all hours of the day. Even with all its faults, the TTC delivers one of the most usable transit services in all of North America.
