I've mostly found that my husband's ancestors were good people. Or, at least, as good as the Puritans could be. Research has been tough the past few days - I found one great who participated in a massacre, and just found the first documented enslaver. Mostly, though, his ancestors were Union 1/

Some of my husband's family came to New England in the 1600s, and they're all "prominent men." Because there were like 80 men in their entire county. 😂 But there's lots of info, which is both good and bad when you're writing a book on alllll his direct ancestors ...

I took a trip to the Illinois State Archives in Springfield yesterday. First time in the Capitol!

Last night I discovered that on October 11, 1883, my husband's 2nd great-grandmother's ship left Scotland for the U.S. She and her sister traveled to Glasgow from Co. Donegal, and it cost them each about $600. I became surprisingly emotional. It's not even my own family. 😆 #genealogy

I've been slowly reading this book. It's a compilation of typed biographies written by an anonymous source (mobster? cop?) and is best read in a noir detective's voice. One of my favorite lines is when the author recounts detectives interrogating Joe Fusco: "... Joe told the dicks to go fry apples."

My crazy neighbor texted this morning to apologize again. I took the opportunity to gently educate her that actions have consequences, and she could've really hurt somebody without meaning to.

I find it ironic that my neighbor turned me in to the village for having too many chickens because I hurt her feelings by saying she's a Nazi. (Which I didn't do; I said that she supports a wannabe Nazi.) She came over crying & confessed. Yeah. Lots of people felt bad after turning in Jews, too.

I have officially added Jabez Gilbert and Eunice Brace as the parents of Abner Gilbert in my family tree. This has been a years-long journey, but I'm confident in my findings. I almost feel like I could cry. I've now broken a brick wall at a 2nd great-grandfather to a brick wall at the 4th. 1/

THREAD: In 2023, I received an envelope with no return address. Inside was a flash drive containing tens of 1000s of secret files. It came from a vigilante with a tumultuous past, who'd conducted a years-long undercover operation. He didn’t tell the FBI or his family. He only told me.

One of the projects I'm working on is documenting all the graves in Babyland at Bethania Cemetery in Justice. Most of the graves are unmarked, but a groundskeeper helped me figure out how far the section extends and that burials happened chronologically. As a result, I've created a spreadsheet. 1/

As a genealogist, I've always been interested in history. I've had an unhealthy obsession with WWII since I first read The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. Nazis didn't start out by killing people. They got there after years of slowly chipping away rights. That's important to remember.

I sent my book to the publisher last night for printing! I should receive it just in time for Christmas. It was 266 pages! Now I can start working on Volume II, which should go faster now that I have my format nailed down (I changed the formatting at least 3 times 😆.)

Unexpectedly choked up after finding a letter my great-great-grandma sent to my grandma in about 1957 (based on the address.) I just wrote a whole book about her family; I just realized I've never seen her handwriting before. Her first language was Bohemian.
