Got my kid Donkey Kong Bananza for his bday and this game has some really great sauce. After he went to bed I spent like 2hrs just smashing stuff and thinking about all the little tech art details they did. Really incredible destruction tech. The rocks in this game are 🤌🤌

i think what a lot of people never seem to realize is that a lot of people's vision of an "epic dream game" isn't actually very deep and comes down to scale and/or having a lot of features, whereas by embracing limitations you can be pushed in a far more radical direction.

The amount of times I sit in a call with a dreamer and their dream game is basically "everything from my favorite six games smashed together into perfect harmony and there was endless flawless content and it has graphics everyone likes" and I have to explain that making feet go on stairs is hard

I’ve only ever read the first six issues of Bone when I was a teen and I’m currently on the third collected book right now with my kid and like holy shit Bone is incredible.

A big piece of advice I can give to people doing level layouts or environment art is make sure you dont get caught up with the view of your level from way high up in the sky. Its really important to stay down where your player is often and absorb that context.

Just a friendly piece of advice when dealing with complex systems in 3d- avoid scaling anything at all costs.

Just saw something so strange that logically- was probably drones but it was very close to me and there was no drone noise at all. There is a pretty small ravine in my backyard and all of a sudden the whole thing lit up with red lights floating everywhere between the trees for about 1 second 6 times

spent close to an hour trouble shooting a normal map that just wasnt doing what it was supposed to and it wasnt a a flipped green channel only to discover that it was a compression thing and I figure this might help someone sometime.

Fable looks not only looks great- it looks fun as hell. I really love those games and this one looks like its really keeping the vibe going and then some. Nice to see something from a microsoft studio that is actually making it to release too.

gotta take my studio TV out back and shoot it because instead of powering off when idle- it starts playing AI generated videos and music and there is no way to turn it off.

My deepest secret is I just still cant give up Modo as my main DCC though Ive been slowly picking up tiny bits of Blender. I have heard that even with Modo gone there are still a few studios that keep it integrated in their pipelines too.

I just love game dev so much. its so much fun for real.
