nice job by @james.crid.land getting the details right about the upcoming HLS video support in Apple Podcasts. Only two quibbles: - iOS/ipadOS only (& vision which is the ipad app), no macOS - alternateEnclosure helps distribute the video to other _apps_, not to other hosts (might have been a flub)

Great article about the new HLS video in Apple Podcasts. It's too bad the HLS source url is not in the RSS feed, but there's nothing stopping hosts from _also_ putting it in the RSS feed (item-level alternateEnclosure). podnews.net/article/vide...

with the upcoming HLS video support in Apple Podcasts, looking forward to hosting companies _also_ using the open standard for this (using podcast:alternateEnclosure) in the same feed, why not? I show every podcast using this standard at hls.livewire.io and will be keeping an extra keen eye on it

Ok, reading the public text closely, you can see that Apple is not hosting the HLS video, but relying on the (partner) hosting company to do that. Apple just takes part in the monetization. The hosting company will determine supported video formats/features podcasters.apple.com/support/5593...

so I guess there's nothing stopping hosting companies from _also_ putting the hls url they give to apple in the alternate enclosure. But making that the primary mechanism would've made for a better forcing function.
