I was not expecting "Love is Blind Poland" to become an ethnographic journey on what the traumas of Polish millennials are (long story short, mostly absence of fathers and alcohol), and why they struggle to communicate so much. That Guardian's list of the best books reminded me that I had made a similar one *double checking my mail* 12 years ago, but thankfully, after one's early 20s, those lists are not really important. (I still think it's a bit better, because it includes Calvino's "If on a Winter's Night a Traveler").

Incredibly happy to hear that Yiyun Li has won Pulitzer for Things in Nature Merely Grow. So rare are books where language and experience are one, instead of language just trying to mirror an experience. It was one of the most important books I’ve read recently, and one I needed in that moment.

As I commented, it may seem far removed from the so-called practical solutions, but I believe that a low regard for historians these days is one of the many indirect reasons for the decline of democracy, and that taking historical research seriously is one of the solutions to strengthen democracy.

Sad information for the Polish literary scene: one of the greatest, if not *the* greatest Polish writer of the latter part of the 20th century, Wiesław Myśliwski, passed away aged 94. These are some of his books translated into English, worth your read, I assure you.
