Also: at the dog park today and was giving dogs little training treats. Gave one to a dog and said "I know how to befriend a dog" and her owner said " if only it was that easy in real life". But it is that easy? Feeding people is basically guaranteed to make them your friend.

As a Target worker I feel it's worth pointing out that if you're single and have no chronic medical costs the primary issue here is housing. In NM after 401k and health insurance I see ~73 cents on the dollar which at the current starting wage is ~1800 a month. This is plenty for food, gas, bowling.
