#OTD 250 years ago, James Cook named the New Year Port in Isla de los Estados (Staten Island) and the New Year Island (nowadays Isla Observatorio). Here he collected the type specimen of several birds, including the Magellanic Penguin, the Striated Caracara and the Upland Goose.

Striated caracaras would regularly enter Magellanic penguin burrows to scavenge dead chicks. We're trying to quantify this small-sized carrion input to see how important this behavior may be, as some individuals seem highly specialized—systematically checking burrows for failed nests

The first step in seriously opposing for-profit publishers is to realize that most publishers are for-profit, and most things short of diamond OA are unethical. It doesn't mean that we are bad people for publishing there, just that there's no ethical academic publishing under capitalism.

We need to all collectively decide to stop propping up these journals (MDPI and “Frontiers In” megajournals) by lending them our credibility. Every time you submit to, review for, guest edit, or even cite (??) these journals, you lend them your hard earned credibility. Don’t do it.

I was approached re: the Finnish decision to downgrade MDPI & Frontiers journals in 🇫🇮 rankings (THE article).
