it's real/authentic to you. That's vulnerability and it takes courage. Courage to work through them and courage to use them in your craft. Be kind to yourself, please. Acting is the work and it's important. But priority is - and should always be - you. ❤️

Simultaneously, for those life experiences that are INSIDE the boundaries - because you've safely worked through them with a good support system and you've become absolutely confident that utilizing them in your acting won't harm you - they can add a lot to your portrayal of the character. Because

Do not cross boundaries that shouldn't be crossed. Whether it's an audition, workshop, or a session, no actor should re-experience any kind of personal trauma in any context for the sake of characterization. Acting is not therapy and it should not be utilized as such. 🧵

Voice acting is, for the most part, working with an invisible scene partner. One thing is for sure: there IS someone present in front of you, reacting to your words, forming their thoughts, behaving as they would. If you can begin to SEE that person, we're in a good place. 💪😤 RedScythe.com

One way to measure progress, in my opinion, is this: Being able to play your own person as a character in a story and sensing your authenticity is fundamental. Being able to feel that same authenticity with a character who is ✨vastly✨ different than you is progress. One character at a time. 💪❤️

The first question every coach has ever asked after the first take is this: "Who are you talking to?" The lines in the script aren't spoken to an inanimate monolith. There is, indeed, a live character in a story you're interacting with. Sounds like a fine skill to hone. 😏💪

Improv.

Let's think about it. Life is a series of choices made in the immediate present. And these choices, when strung together, form the backbone of a story. That's improv. And the more you do it, better you get at making stronger choices and existing in the moment more presently. 😏

The first milestone of actor training is to attain the ability to perform as yourself. To make real your behaviors and reactions to a point that it feels honest and truthful TO YOU, inside any fictitious given circumstances. That's "good." And it's the fundamental expectation. 💪😤

In Notes From Casting sessions, you'll record a mock audition and send it in. That audition is played in the session and the director will weigh in with their thoughts. Then, the director will work with you to bring that performance closer to what they would have liked to hear.

I fervently insist that you - everyone who may come across this - hold on to that PLAY as best you can. And continue to maintain, develop, evolve, and expand the willingness to play. Without inhibition, without doubt - just like we used to when we were kids. Let's make some cool shit. ❤️ And PLAY. 💪

This industry is filled with stories of "I was unhappy in my adult life/work and now that I'm a voice actor (or other creative craft/field), I'm much happier." And I'm quite certain that those folks longed for PLAY. That it had degraded over time, as "adulting" took over. 1/2
