But considering the last ten years, I would say that we are going in the direction of an anthropology of rivers. Coincidentally, Henk Driessen wrote a chapter about that ('Towards an Ethnography of Rivers').

Thanks to my brother, I am starting ‘25 by re-reading Dante’s Inferno, (last read for Italian Lit exam in ‘02! 😱) It’s really incredible. And in this time of triumphing evil, Dante’s (a)moral landscape reads so timely. You can easily place so many present-day characters in his inferno!

For my river history (re)readings I recently completed The Conquest of Nature by David Blackburn, a widely cited 2006 #envhist book I first read in 2012. It tells the history of German rivers and landscape engineering from the eighteenth century to the end of the twentieth. 1/🧵

I'm also super excited to share my first article, which builds on some of the work I did for my PhD. I discuss how revolutionaries operating through the port of Genoa used the sea and worldwide business connections to staff and supply the army that unified Italy in 1860.

Looks like one for my #envhist seminar syllabus next year. Every year there is at least 1 student who is familiar with some version of ecological “collapse” and this might be just the right antidote…
