A very exciting, and unexpected night!

When we saw this Powerful Owl roosting near the hollow we assumed it was the male. On closer inspection the 'nibbled' feathers suggest female. All the Powls we follow are at different stages. Some are still investigating hollows, some have just gone in, and tonight we heard the 1st chick trilling!

First pair of the season in a hollow! Powls only use hollows when breeding, so this pair is on again! At dusk the male called quietly until she joined him and we watched as he delicately fed her. After some allopreening and wing stretches, she returned to the hollow. Exciting times! #birds #wildoz

Channel-billed Cuckoo chick. A 3rd chick was released to the family last week. Then, almost immediately the crows went from 3 to 1 mouths to feed. I'd assumed the original siblings had migrated, leaving the reintroduced chick behind, but have been told by the lovely carer that this is not her Bill.

Going back to check on the released POwl, I thought I'd found her, instead it was this Boobook being mobbed by everything around. Given how urban the area is I wasn't too surprised not to see her. Hopefully she's found a safer, more protected area to roost. #birds #wildoz #brisbane

Powerful Owl & @lucyparkerpaul.bsky.social before release. It had been in care for a month with an injured wing, but once out it flew very well into the nearby tree, preened & looked around for quite some time orientating itself. It was released in a suitable location close to where it was rescued.

This Koala was in a small clump of trees between 2 Powerful owls, only about 12m away from each of them! Luckily it looked too big for a Powl, but as it's one of the Powls non-breeding roost area's you'd think the Koala would have sensed the danger. #wildoz #birds #brisbane

The female POwl found herself a quieter spot today. Unusually, she's been closer to a nest tree recently. It could be coincidence & it's far too early but we've already seen the male checking out the hollow at dusk, as she watched on. It'll be interesting to see if a new pairing breed earlier.

We've noticed Powlets roosting alone, not trilling at dusk or interacting with parents. Wondering if it's an age thing we visited a local Powlet last night. No parents, but it did trill, once when mobbed by a drongo and then when it went to hunt. We were super excited to see it swoop a possum #birds
