IRC was critical for my first years of indie full time. I logged onto the unity3D irc at the same time every weekday morning along with a bunch of other devs. We taught each other so much. It was more effective for this purpose than discord because it only worked with active users.

I like brainstorming game design by asking people to imagine a terrible version of the final product. A design north star is useful, but it’s more fun to flee a dreaded outcome.

I’m an advocate for a huge ugly panel of debug buttons! It’s so much nicer to make games this way. I made personal editor windows like this for Demonschool, Phantom Spark and Desta.

I’ve long advocated for different cuts of content. Give me the Readers’ Digest version of games. Give me the whole MCU as a 12 part series. Give me a 5 hour version of Final Fantasy Rebirth.

In 2025 I had very little opportunity to finish things, but I did a great job at logging over 100 experiments and techniques in Notion. It’s like a tutorial series with myself as the sole audience. I’ve done this for about 4 years now and it’s my favourite good habit.

Paper Prototypes is the term I’ve used for digital interactive prototypes built with simple tools. Miro is a good option for this, but in the past I’ve had people move objects around in Photoshop. Meanwhile UX flow tests are usually called Wireframes, even if they look different.

Question for game devs: what do you call investigative tests and experiments? These are not the same as prototypes. The goal is to see what has potential with art and code, or to verify assumptions. I’ve always called it ‘noodling’.

When talking about games, one thing I've tried to actively delete from my vocabulary is 'It's not for everyone'. Because duh, nothing is. Instead, I want to say 'This is for people who love X or Y, but if you're expecting Z, you'll probably bounce off'. Specific understanding of tastes and appeals.

I’m watching a jerk on ‘game dev youtube’ say “Prototypes tell you whether you are gifted”. This is wrong. Prototypes are one of many tools that lets you understand the potential of the game. They’re not a measure of skill. Abandon conceits like being ‘good enough’ and just do the work.
