Watch this gr9 solve 2x+3=x+1 w/ algebra tiles. Day before we used tiles to add&subtract polynomials. Then a bit of direct instruction for solving eq&off they went! Every time there’s been an A-ha moment, an understanding of the math concept as a result of work with concrete objects, I thought of Maria #Montessori’s belief from almost 100 years ago: a child’s “hand activities” and “psychological development” are so closely entwined. @tdsbmath.bsky.social

Math Learning Partners from @tdsbmath.bsky.social, in partnership w/ @oiseuoft.bsky.social, ran the 4th & final day of our PL series on destreaming Grade 9 math. Teachers experienced geometry & financial literacy expectations, and small-group instruction to push student thinking forward. #EduSky

The core of our team includes 25 amazing Math Learning Partners! They work w/ teachers from 125 schools to build math content knowledge & instructional capacity, support students as they learn, & collaborate to stretch their own math thinking. They bring our math achievement action plan to life.

I tagged along w/ my @tdsbmath.bsky.social teammate Greg Saylor to a Grade 10 class at Thistletown CI who were solving quadratic equations via factoring, quadratic formula, & graphing using thin-sliced tasks. It was so cool to see the connections students were making between these strategies.

Last week, Math Learning Partners from @tdsbmath.bsky.social learned w/ Dr. Alex Lawson & Heather Wark on their research into multiplicative reasoning. Thinking multiplicatively is so crucial for children. Without moving from additive thinking, students are ill-prepared for more complex math ideas.
