The latest #NSF regulations on China seem to have been widely misreported. The bans mainly cover companies and only appear to name about 30 universities or research institutes mainly in defense, aerospace, electronics and materials science. For context, there are about 3000 universities in China.

Sadly, it’s no surprise that climate change is making El Niño events more ferocious. 🌊 Here’s IPCC AR6 Box 11.4 saying that extreme El Niños occur more frequently in a warming world. ⤵️ Still, the exceedance magnitude of this summer’s event beyond all previous events is eye opening. 👀

I often see media posts praising someone who publishes a paper a week. I guess some people think this is an achievement. Is it? When we write a quality paper, months-to-years of person time have gone into it. Something that reflects hours-to-days of effort is almost always going to be low quality.

'Bans' are designed to 'make America great again', but the easiest solution to the problems bans create is to exclude US scientists from international projects- which is unfortunately what we often have to do. There's a good chance outright bans will damage US science leadership more than China's.

Onsite measurements reveal the presence of radionuclides, at levels higher than expected in this area.

A nice start to the week running a mangrove survey with SUSTech students. Liew will be running monthly surveys through the year to assess seasonal changes in biogeochemistry as part of his MSc thesis. Our undergraduates like to come along because it's fun 🌊

A big bias in science that can easily be addressed is recommended reviewer lists. Often these are heavily skewed towards the USA where some researchers are swamped with invites. It's common to find tenured Professors elsewhere who receive very few (or no!) reviewer invitations in their field.

The world's oceans have just recorded their hottest June on record—and with El Niño developing, even more heat may be on the way. 🌊🌡️ Why does this matter? Warmer oceans fuel marine heatwaves, reshape weather patterns, and increase the risk of extreme events worldwide.
