Summer of Horror – Eight Books With the Haunted/Possessed Doll Trope
I'm kicking off the first Friday of Summer of Horror with a list! Last summer I explored color in horror book covers, and this year I'm tackling some horror tropes, both familiar and a little off the beaten path. Haunted or possessed dolls is one of the creepier themes in horror, and while it's not as popular as other tropes, I managed to find eight books that fit the theme.

The nitty-gritty: A complex, fantastical coming-of-age story that explores fame, family ties and the blurred boundaries between fantasy and reality, The Children is a mesmerizing tale that will haunt readers with its sense of foreboding and wonder. “Her whole rib cage ached with understanding. There would be no going back. No earlier, softer place. Time ran in one direction; they would never be children again.”

We are almost halfway through the year, can you believe it?? June is a big month for new releases, and as usual I've added way too many to my plate! This list includes all genres, including the June releases I've chosen to read for Summer of Horror. I have already read The Children, and it might end up in my top five at the end of the year, I loved it that much.

As always, I sincerely appreciate each book sent to me by publishers, and I will recognize each one below. Here we go! Books in the mail for review: Milkteeth by Caitlin Starling. The nitty-gritty: Gritty crime drama meets killer teddy bears in this high concept, bloody tale of revenge. Teddy Bears Never Die is probably one of the strangest books I’ve ever read, and the fact that it’s also a translated book (written by a Korean author and translated by a Korean translator), the “strange” factor jumps up to eleven. The beginning was rough for me, and I even considered DNFing it at one point.

Summer of Horror 2026 kicks off on June 1st, and I'd love you to join me in celebrating all things horror! Last year I was thrilled that so many bloggers join in, so this year I'm hoping to expand things a bit with a sign up sheet to keep the event more organized. This is a fairly long event that stretches throughout the summer months of June, July and August, so it gives us plenty of time to share reviews, lists, and more.

The nitty-gritty: Two unhappy women seek revenge in this dark, bite-sized story, full of black humor and cats. I loved Icelandic writer Hildur Knútsdóttir's last book, The Night Guest, so I was very excited to read Dead Weight. First, I want to mention that although this is being marketed as horror, it’s anything but. Honestly, I would file this under literary fiction.

Twelve Speculative Fiction Books Set During the War
In honor of the upcoming Memorial Day holiday, I wanted to share a list of speculative fiction books set during wars that the U.S. was involved in (since this is a U.S. holiday). I've been thinking about doing this list for a few years now, but it took some time to find and compile it. And because Angel Down just won the Pulitzer Price for fiction, a story firmly entrenched in WWI (sorry, pun not intended!) it seemed like perfect timing.

The nitty-gritty: A mysterious ancient artifact is the centerpiece of this well written, carefully researched and plotted story, perfect for readers who love scholarly mysteries. The Gatepost is another excellent story by Tim Weed, whose last book, The Afterlife Project, was one of my favorite books from last year. The Gatepost didn’t hit quite as hard as The Afterlife Project, since it lacked the incredible sense of awe I felt while reading that book.

The nitty-gritty: Sara Raasch combines humor, sports and romance in her latest, a lively, sexy fantasy with lovable characters and thoughtful themes. This is the second book in Sara Raasch’s Magic & Romance series, and this time we follow a side character from the first book who ends up getting his happily-ever-after. This is a fun, well written, spicy series—with emphasis on the spice—so if you’re not into M/M romance and hook-ups, best look elsewhere for reading material.

ABYSS by Nicholas Binge – Review
The nitty-gritty: Nicholas Binge combines cosmic horror with biting commentary on big corporations in this short and entertaining novella. Nicholas Binge is such a good writer, and Abyss was a fun, mind-bending story with some Lovecraftian horror elements, hence the tentacled creature on the cover. It’s also a cautionary tale of corporate greed and how big companies devour their employees, and although I’m sometimes hesitant to read books with heavy social commentary, this time it really worked for me.

The nitty-gritty: Intricately constructed and full of surprising reveals and connections, The Girl With a Thousand Faces is an epic, emotional journey of revenge, trauma and forgiveness. “Pain and grief are holes that never fill. Buffy’s Corner 5/3/26 – Looking at the Week Ahead
Welcome to Buffy's Corner, where I take a look at what's coming up this week on the blog! I'm linking up with The Sunday Post over at Kimberly's blog, The Caffeinated Reviewer. Work was super slow this week, and on Thursday I thought it was Friday all day, lol. Imagine how excited I was to realize my mistake. So the week felt very long, and now of course the weekend is speeding by!

THE CAFÉ OF INFINITE DOORS by Zara Marielle – Review
The nitty-gritty: A magical cafe is the setting for this engaging fantasy that blends mythology and modern themes. The Café of Infinite Doors has a fascinating premise, but it ended up being a mixed bag for me, mostly because of the characters (I’ll explain more below). I did love the touches of folklore, however, which give it a magical, otherworldly quality.

Happy May! This month I'm participating in Wyrd & Wonder, a fantasy reading event, so I'm going to separate my books into two piles: fantasy and other genres. I'm actually surprised how much of my May TBR is fantasy, although some of these are a mash up of fantasy and horror. If you don't know about Wyrd & Wonder and you want to learn more, click on the links below.

I'm linking up with Top Ten Tuesday, which was created by The Broke and the Bookish and is now hosted by Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl. Check out upcoming Top Ten themes on Jana's blog. Today is a "Freebie," and my mind usually goes to types of book covers for freebie prompts. I love seeing different animals on book covers, and lately I've noticed quite a few books with deer on the cover.

BODIES OF WORK by Clay McLeod Chapman – Review
The nitty-gritty: Full of gorgeous, disturbing imagery and ambitious in scope, Bodies of Work is a unsettling peek into the mind of a killer. Clay McLeod Chapman always comes up with unique ideas, and in Bodies of Work, he’s taken the story of real life artist Henry Darger and built a fictional tale inspired by his life. He melds art, literature and war into a fever dream about a serial killer who is driven to create and kills young women as part of that creation.

THE LANGUAGE OF LIARS by S.L. Huang – Review
The nitty-gritty: A high stakes, emotional tale that explores language and communication between species, The Language of Liars is both thrilling and heart-wrenching. “He’d only wanted to understand them. How many Linguists had told themselves that lie? A lie enough repeated until it becomes true.” The Language of Liars is a beautifully written science fiction story about communication and how powerful language can be—in both good and bad ways.

THE BOOK WITCH by Meg Shaffer – Review
The nitty-gritty: Magical, funny and surprising, The Book Witch is a delightful, "can't miss" story that embraces the joys of books and reading. “All stories are love stories if you love stories.” Book lovers rejoice! The Book Witch might be the best love letter to books and readers I’ve ever come across, and while I’ll admit the beginning was a little shaky for me, Meg Shaffer pulled off a huge surprise midway through that turned everything around.

JAPANESE GOTHIC by Kylie Lee Baker – Review
The nitty-gritty: A mind-bending, bloody mystery, Japanese Gothic blends time travel and folklore into an emotional and heartbreaking story. Japanese Gothic is one of the most unique stories I’ve read in a long time, and Kylie Lee Baker has become a new favorite author after reading it. This is a multilayered story with two timelines, but here the timelines cross over via a mysterious closet.

THE VERDANT CAGE by Jess Lourey – Review
The nitty-gritty: Lovers of YA dystopian stories won't want to miss this series opener, a fast-paced, action-packed tale with plenty of surprises in store. The Verdant Cage has been getting lots of great buzz, so I was eager to experience it for myself. And I really enjoyed it, especially the last quarter of the book. Yes, it’s YA and has some of the inherent issues and elements I don’t enjoy, but overall I was sucked into the story and honestly, I am chomping at the bit for the sequel.

THE TRICKY BUSINESS OF FAERIE BARGAINS by Reena McCarty – Review
The nitty-gritty: A woman must return to the faerie world she was thrown out of in this fun and twisty fantasy debut. Books about faeries and the fae realm seem to be everywhere these days, so it’s nice to come across one that feels a little different. There are familiar elements in The Tricky Business of Faerie Bargains, but I also found parts of the world building to be unique as well.
