This isn’t normal, and this should not be what I am finding in our streets. This is not a war zone. This is our home. Last week, I spent hours in the car in Avondale, trying to find ICE agents and locate community members, as well as advocate to get folks released who have been detained.

On Saturday, our IPOs from across the Northwest Side and the city came together to get signatures for a host of our progressive electeds, and we collected over 1,000. There was a lot of grief in the room that day, but also a lot of love, and a lot of determination.

In the last week, we have witnessed state-sponsored terrorism. So-called ICE agents, (who knows, since we haven't seen warrants or badges) have been terrorizing innocent people throughout our city.

Wednesday's response to a raft of ICE detainments and kidnappings on the Northwest Side and in Albany Park was a moving community love letter to this neighborhood.

On Saturday, still reeling from what happened in our community this last week, we went out to knock doors with United Neighbors of the 26th Ward.

On Friday, September 19, 2025, at the ICE temporary detention facility in Broadview, Illinois, federal agents escalated their assault on peaceful protest and free speech.

ICE has been operating actively on the Northwest Side in the last week, and our Rapid Response Team has been working incredibly hard to verify reports, as well as support neighbors. But we need help.

Today’s Emergency Response Town Hall: Resisting ICE was a wave of energy and positivity after a week of anxiety, fury, grief, and struggle.

These images bring up a lot of emotion. Paul Goyette was at Broadview most of Friday, documenting the continued violations of folks’ rights that occurred throughout the day—through tear gas, physical violence, and the continued militarized posture ICE agents took toward us.

Since Wednesday, I have been in my car every day beginning at 6 a.m., chasing down reports of ICE throughout the 20th Senate District—my home, where my constituents live—while my phone has literally been ringing off the hook with updates about ICE activity in our neighborhoods.

State Senator Graciela Guzman is out here in front of the facility demanding the release of two of her constituents (who are U.S. citizens), asking to speak with federal agents. No response from them so far. Shes putting on a respirator.

Throwing it back to another great evening knocking doors with Cook County Commissioner Jessica Vásquez last week. We’ve been chatting state services as well as the state of transportation, healthcare, and affordable housing with community members.

Staring down the threat of the National Guard and ICE in our neighborhoods this weekend, we did what we do best: mobilize.

Let me keep it real like always. A few days ago, my spirit was feeling a bit all over the place: stressed, anxious, and unfocused. I didn’t quite have it in me right at the top of the evening to knock on doors but went out anyway.
