When I generalize about "men" without making a distinction between this kind of man and that kind of man, I am playing turnabout. For 10,000 years and in the greatly revered texts of Western literature and philosophy, men have referred to "women" without making any qualifications.

In 2002, I drove to Columbus to be a writer-in-residence at Thurber House. The gig included an apartment on the top floor of the nondescript, three-story house where famous woman-hater James Thurber had lived. It sat on a forlorn street, near two highways and a thinly populated business zone.

I remember loving people I have strongly desired for one reason or another, as if the memory is still happening. I remember this in greater detail and with more pleasure than I remember being loved. I can hardly express what being loved feels like, but this other thing I can replay any time.
