🌄 Charnwood Forest has long been celebrated for its fantastic views. 📘 In 1790, John Throsby wrote of the summit at Hill Hole in Markfield: "...England produceth not another where the mind of man, fixed on futurity, might exercise itself with more profit."

🌍 Did you know, when the sedimentary rocks of Beacon Hill were laid down - 565 million years ago - Charnwood Forest would have been at the bottom of the sea. Back then our region was far from where it is now, with a latitude of around 60° south of the equator!

💧 Thornton Reservoir, in the south west of the Geopark, was constructed in 1854 to supply drinking water to the growing communities of Leicestershire. 🚶 Today it is a peaceful place to explore the trails around the water's edge.

More geoconservation work completed today at Morley Quarry in @charnwoodforest.bsky.social Vegetation was cleared around the interpretation boards,litter picking took place, and some sapling removal was followed by a group picnic, luckily we had finished before the heavy showers arrived.
