It's not as if Anno returned to Evangelion to finance more auteur films like “Love & Pop” or “Ritual.” He's perfectly happy literally playing with other people's toys (Cutie Honey, Godzilla, Ultraman, Kamen Rider, Yamato...) in much less serious works (which reflect better mental health, btw).

We have to differentiate between franchises exploited by committees of shareholders by mere inertia and authors who create a successful universe and, when they get tired of playing with it, invite others to continue it. This isn't new! Evangelion has always being a transmedia project!
