As an American, I always thought Brits saying "cheers" meant BYE! Now working with some Brits I realize that "cheers" is complicated. It rarely means Bye, it often means "thanks", and It can mean "well f off then!" When American's say "cheers" is always, only, simply means "Let's drink!"
