Going to try and post more of my reading here - from kids to adult books! Here’s a YA book I just finished. It’s the second in a duology. Takes place in Egypt!

I finished this middle grade novel last week and I haven’t stopped thinking about it. I laughed. I cried - sometimes on the same page. These characters will be with me for a long long time.

I just sat through days of standardized testing with elementary students this week. 3rd and 4th graders are expected to sustain critical thinking for abt 45-60 mins. But how often do they get a chance to practice that stamina on a daily basis? Weekly?

Every time I read about banning books, I think of this: Reading a book with a gay character will not make you gay any more than reading a book about Einstein will make you a genius. If you're afraid that books might change someone's thinking, you're not afraid of books — you're afraid of thinking.

Definitely for readers of the Bad Guys… especially if they aren’t looking for a character arc. Because these bunnies definitely stay bad! Not to use when discussing apologies or changing one’s behavior. But kids will laugh and want to read more!

Developing readers and teaching literature are two different goals. There are areas of overlap, but pursuing one of them doesn’t always accomplish the other.
