During the 2023 Manipur conflict, large parts of the state were forcibly disconnected from the rest of the world. Widespread power outages left women without income, safety pathways, learning access, healthcare links, or communication with displaced families.

Despite gig work platforms claiming ‘disintermediation’, there are “platform intermediaries,” or human agents employed by platforms, who are responsible for onboarding domestic workers, connecting them with potential employers, and helping navigate conflict in the worker-employer relationship.
