Exciting times for the journal, folks. In the last 10 days, we've accepted our first manuscript and issued "accept, pending" decisions on two others. It's fab seeing the work come together, from remarkably rigorous and detailed peer review to equally detailed and engaging Author replies. =)

It's time again for our bi-monthly updates! Submissions are a tick down, but of 10 submissions: * Five were desk-rejected with feedback, in an average of 3.4 days. * Five were peer-reviewed and sent back with major revisions, in an average of 37.4 days (longest was 41 days)

Oh we're sorry - make that "our first *TWO* acceptances." Y'all are about to see some pretty fantastic @icahdq.bsky.social scholarship in our pages. Details of #2 coming, once we get the final edits. =)

We're about 2 months into our journal, so we've got some initial peer review statistics to report. * So far, we're received 21 submissions * 11 / 21 were desk rejected (w/extensive feedback) * Of the remaining 10? 5 have been invited back for R&R

"What, you desk rejected my paper. Can' t I just revise and resubmit?" This question comes up a lot. Via @bowmanspartan.bsky.social: "We prefer desk reject over an editor-only revise and resubmit for three main reasons: avoiding delays, reducing snap judgements, and securing reviews." How so?

So far, we've translated the GPC call for papers into nine different global languages, with many more on the way. =) We'll release the documents once we've got them hosted, but thanks so much to our GPC board for hopping on board this project!

"So, how Global does my paper need to be? We get this a lot, and the short answer is that "if it's from the Globe we call home, it's interesting to GPC." Our focus on Global is less about a narrow view on work from specific regions but more a recognition that journals need truly Global engagement!

"Does my submission need a cover letter?" We would say yes. Cover letters help us better understand the history of your work (e.g., was it presented at a prior @icahdq.bsky.social or elsewhere?) and help us see where and why you see a good fit for our journal.

Our editor is a bit of a paradox: cutting-edge thoughts on open-access publishing and engaging the @icahdq.bsky.social community, but with a ride nearly as old as our field. =) (okay, maybe not that old, but ... still)

"Do you accept meta-analyses, scoping reviews, and systematic reviews?" Absolutely we do. =)

"You're an open-access journal, so it's going to be expensive." We are open-access, but we aren't expensive! Articles w/GPC do carry an APC, but through our agreement w/@oxfordacademic.bsky.social, fees are waived for authors who do not have the means. Read more: academic.oup.com/gpc/pages/wh...

"How are you handing papers in various languages?" It's a great question. While we are an English-language journal and thus, we do need submissions in English so that our reviewer team can access them, we're encouraging authors to make ample use of supplemental folders for other content!

Our first peer review requests are going out today! We'll continue to "massage" our language, but here's how we're codifying our "three caveats" for GPC reviewers - we don't enforce style guides, we don't police Englishes, and we don't ask for rote justification of samples. =)

A lot of our lost literacy narratives are built on enormous misunderstandings of what literacy has tended to look like over time, and the lost interpretive literacy narrative itself goes at least back to Plato and hits nearly every Thinker™️ from then to now.

A question we've gotten lately, "Is it okay to submit my #ICA25 paper to your journal?" It absolutely is! Of course, a few suggestions that you might keep in mind as you prepare those manuscripts for us:

At #ICA25, we hosted around two dozen early career scholars for a peer review workshop. A few takeaways, for those interested, follow in this thread. NOTE: We hear a rumor that @icahdq.bsky.social might share some more details on the workshop later, and we'll be there also. =)

How can you tell if your paper is a good editorial fit for us? We're very open to the "anything under the tent" at @icahdq.bsky.social. If a paper had been priorly accepted at #ICA25 (or even earlier), let us know in your editorial letter - that's at least a good signal for fit!

We've also been asked at #ICA25, "Will you do special issues? For now? We'd rather not. Instead? We'd argue that the very areas of scholarship who feel that they need special issues ... are the very areas of scholarship that should be very much part of the regular rotation of articles at GPC!

"I see you've got reports and papers. What gives?" Glad you asked, #ICA25! For most folks, the "full" papers are your standard fare completed works (~8K words), representing every corner of ICA. Reports? Much shorter (~4K words), meant to give space for emerging & incremental scholarship.
