Our interns are a crucial part of our office — answering phones, helping with casework requests, and supporting legislative work for hundreds of constituents. While interns can’t work during this government shutdown, we are beginning to hire for our spring internship program!

President Trump promised to lower costs day one, but his reckless economic policies have done the opposite – driving up costs everywhere from the grocery store to the pharmacy. Now, the Supreme Court is taking up oral arguments on President Trump’s use of emergency powers to impose sweeping tariffs.

Even before the government shutdown, the winter months can be a difficult time for many of our neighbors. If you’re able to, I encourage you to join me in stopping by the Annapolis Police Department’s Thanksgiving Food Drive from now until Monday, November 17th.

Federal workers have continued to show up for the past 37 days of this government shutdown without a paycheck. But Speaker Johnson has cancelled votes for the past six weeks, which means the House has only been in Washington 12 of the last 100 days. That is nothing short of shameful.

Ahead of last week’s critical deadline for SNAP funding, I sat down with Tom Hall on WYPR to discuss the importance of fully funding SNAP, solving our country’s looming health care crisis, and legislation I’m working on in Congress to support our crucial civil servants during these uncertain times.

There are more than 2.9 million federal workers across our country – including 45,000 civil servants in #MD03 alone – who are all being acutely and disproportionately impacted by this shutdown, but who have also been under constant assault by this Administration.

@Sen_alsobrooks and I introduced the Shutdown Student Loans for Feds Act to pause student loan payments for all federal workers – including furloughed employees, contractors, and our troops.

Today is the first day of open enrollment for the ACA Marketplace. I’m fighting to protect the ACA in Washington and keep health care affordable and accessible for all of our neighbors. But for now, if you’re in Maryland, you can switch or join a health plan that works best for you.

I’ll be stopping by and donating to County Executive Calvin Ball’s countywide food drive tomorrow. If you’re able to, I encourage you to join in at one of the five locations from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM tomorrow. We can all play a part in making sure our neighbors don’t go hungry.

NEW: The courts have ruled the President CANNOT use this shutdown to take away food assistance from our neighbors in need. Hunger should never be used as a bargaining chip. It’s cruel and it’s illegal.

Our civil servants go through years of education and training to develop the skills to serve the American people – they should not be penalized for delayed student loan payments because of inaction in Washington.

With 45,000 federal workers in #MD03, my office is doing everything we can to support our civil servants and contractors going without a paycheck – including working with Maryland state and local officials to provide updated resources and guidance throughout this shutdown.

Republicans have already tried to repeal or weaken the ACA more than 70 times over the past 15 years, and now, instead of re-authorizing the ACA tax credits that make health care affordable for millions of Americans, Republicans are trying to repeal the ACA again.

Over the past four weeks, I’ve heard from many of you who have been impacted by the shutdown – and time and time again, I’m hearing from constituents and their family members whose premiums are set to skyrocket if Congress does not extend the ACA tax credits.

Happy Howard County Pride! LGBTQ+ History Month gives us an opportunity to come together & reflect on the long history of the LGBTQ+ community’s fight for equal rights – & recommit to carrying the work forward. It was lovely to join so many neighbors, faith leaders, & community groups this weekend.

This year alone, it’s estimated that more than 300,000 people will be diagnosed with breast cancer in our country. Breast Cancer Awareness Month gives us the opportunity to educate people about breast cancer risks and uplift prevention resources like regular screenings and early detection.

Seven years ago today, a gunman opened fire into the Tree of Life Synagogue, tragically taking the lives of 11 people and injuring 6 others in the deadliest antisemitic attack in our nation’s history.

Let’s be clear: the Trump Administration has been attacking our federal workforce since day one. Maryland has already lost more than 15,000 federal jobs from the days of DOGE, yet the President and OMB continue to attack our civil service even during this shutdown.

We are now four weeks into this Republican shutdown, which means four weeks that federal employees and contractors have gone without paychecks. The least we can do is help them keep the lights and water on in their homes for their families.

Thank you to the staff and volunteers at the Anne Arundel and Howard County food banks who support our neighbors on their hardest days - including throughout this shutdown. I’m grateful my team and I could play a small part today in the critical services you provide for our communities.

Our country is in the midst of an affordability crisis – whether it’s child care, health care or housing, our neighbors are struggling. Since my time in the State Senate, I’ve been working on solutions to expand affordable housing options – and the Chase Home has been a partner through it all.

Prior to the government shutdown, more than half of Americans were already living paycheck to paycheck. And now - four weeks of this shutdown - many of our neighbors, including federal workers and contractors, are turning to food banks to put food on the table each day.

Congress has known for months that government funding would run out on September 30th and that the ACA tax credits would expire on January 1st.

Even though we’re nearing the longest government shutdown in our nation’s history, Speaker Johnson has continued to cancel votes – leaving us scattered across the country and unable to negotiate.

It has been the law since 2019 that furloughed federal workers will receive back pay, and this shutdown does not give the President or OMB any power to change that.

44,000 federal workers reside in the Third District, and each and every one of them is feeling the effects of this shutdown. Throughout this shutdown, Team Maryland remains committed to supporting our hard-working civil servants and constituents each and every day.

As we enter the fourth week of this Republican shutdown, I wanted to sit down with @repwalkinshaw.bsky.social, one of the newest members of Congress, who also represents tens of thousands of federal workers, to discuss how his district has been impacted & how we’re navigating these uncertain times.

For the past 60 years, the University of Maryland Baltimore Washington Medical Center has been providing acute care services – from heart care to cancer treatment – to our neighbors.
