As a youth it never occurred to me that it was ego – I only noticed Gygax naming stuff after himself after his ouster from TSR. I assumed it was a way to ensure that his name stayed on his creations. As an adult, I can see the ego - but I’m not sure that teen me was completely wrong, either.

This better describes my experience as a pre-teen in the 1980’s learning D&D on my own than anything I’ve read in any OSR manifesto. I also think the influence of “Choose Your Own Adventure”-style books is vastly underestimated. For a lot of kids, it was the only clue we had on how to run D&D!

I don’t know where I first heard the quote, but, I really relate to “The only thing worse than writing is not writing”. I do occasionally enter a perfect sort of flow state, & when that happens, it’s GLORIOUS. But most of the time I have to rip words out of ether & chain them to the page. And -

Few things bring me more joy than seeing a Forge Of Ice miniature painted out in the wild. This one was purchased at Gary Con and painted pretty much immediately! I love the metallic tones.

I’m finally home from my travels, relatively rested-ish, and halfway unpacked. So now is of course the perfect time to start tinkering with the new Ophidian Menace minis that I’ll be releasing soon as a boxed set.

My yearly pilgrimage to Renaissance Books in the Milwaukee airport has once again proven fruitful. A historical account of actual medieval outlaws that I’m sure will have some cool stuff I can use for RPG’s, a 1st print Moorcock HC, and two pulp hero reprints. Plenty to read on the way home!

Just saw a sign that said “Drink Wisconsibly” in a bar window and I am deeply disappointed in myself that I didn’t think to take a photo.

One thing I know for next year’s Gary Con: I think I need a bigger booth. Even if only half of the stuff that I’m hoping to make in the next 12 months comes to fruition, I will be EXTREMELY out of space. I think my “Made in Alaska” and “Fuck AI” signs need to be bigger, too.

What do you do when a couple thousand flights have been cancelled and you’re stuck in an airport for three days? Start by reading some Doc Savage novels that you haven’t read before! (At least, that’s what you do when you’re me!) I’ll be at Gary Con on Friday!

The Northern Lights are going strong! I was able to get this photo with my old-ass cell phone while sitting in the car. I am pretty stoked to see what actual photographers with fancy cameras have to show us in the next couple of days.

I’ve heard there comes a time when one is supposed to outgrow one’s love of Frank Frazetta. I don’t think that’s ever going to happen to me. That said, I’m not sure that Nekron needs a sympathetic backstory. But there’s good art & some solid Sword & Sorcery ideas here. I’ll buy the next issue!

I’ve talked about it a bit, but I think this can be an Official™️ announcement: we’re nearly ready to launch our fantasy post-apocalyptic pirate Shadowdark book SHADOWSAILS on Kickstarter. The first thing that happens when a D&D world floods? Every monster in every dungeon crawls up to the surface…

I struggle to define “what is art?”, but I think this might qualify.

Well, I WAS all excited about some cool Shadowdark stuff I just wrote but after coming back online after like an 18-hour break we’re apparently at war??? I’m so fucking tired of living in interesting times.

This young fella ran out in front of me on my way to the post office today. It felt like a suitably barbaric omen. Good things are coming!

It won’t quite be done by Gary Con, but I’ve got a new thing in the works.

I know that Fairbanks, Alaska, is a very VERY small population sample size - but I got UNIVERSALLY positive responses from people who saw this sign at my booth. So that feels hopeful.

Just spent 20 mins on FB, and spent almost that entire time blocking ads from religious pages (often with 0 likes & 0 followers) & AI slop posts from groups I’m not in. I still get a lot of positive use out of some of the private groups that I’m in, but, the rest of the site is basically unusable.

Wellp, I guess I can add “helped to measure a world record breakingly-tall balloon Godzilla costume for Guinness” to the list of interesting things I’ve done in my life.
